Online Roleplayer has got hold of BioWare Community Manager Jay Watamaniuk for some answers. Here's the first one:

Why would a company like BioWare make a game like Neverwinter Nights and pour considerable money into supporting the community when they sell more units on a game like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic and there is no longer term 'community' to have to support and continually add new features for?" The obvious follow on question is: "What advantages are there to having a long term active community?"

BioWare made Neverwinter Nights because we are passionate about RPG’s, and the chance to work with a great license like D&D was too good to pass up. We included the toolset with NWN because we wanted to support our fans with a feature that many had asked for, and because the opportunity to build an active community was very attractive to us. Supporting the community is something we are happy to do – that same community supports BioWare. We think it makes a lot of sense to keep our customers happy and demonstrate that when we develop a game, we also support it after it is in the hands of gamers. That support may be rich and complex like community or it may mean technical support and patches after a game is released.
