[IMG] and I have a question. I have last years version of TaxCut by H&R Block. Do I have to purchase the new version in stores now, or can I just update my older version to work?
My wife and I got married this past April (2002). I made about half of what she made last year. We also moved from Alabama to California. All of our moving expenses were done with credit cards and checks that were solely in my wife's name.
    So, my other questiones are:
Should we file separately or jointly? And if I file separately, do I check single of married since I was single for part of the year.
( Did I just post a topic that actually had a purpose?)

Here is a thought, Elios. Why don't you try to call the IRS and ask them - or ask a professional who would know.

(As much as I respect everyone on these boards, I don't think that I, personally, would ask for tax tips on the internet)

The thought to call has crossed my mind. But seriously, have you ever tried to call them?
When I was starting up my own business, i had to call to get ID numbers and stuff. I must have gone through at least 15 different menues to get to someone. Plus waiting. Just thought it would be easier asking around. YOu usually get answers faster that way

Well, since you've got software just enter all the numbers and run it once jointly and once individually and see which results in the lower sum payment.

I would hope that HRBlock would provide updates rather than a complete new package. What does their website say?

No, you have to buy your tax software every year; how else would they make money to update it for the tax changes every year?

Once you've bought it for that tax year though, you can typically download updates they've made for that year.

And yes, what I'd do is try different ways of filing (single, married filing separately, married filing jointly) and see which one comes up more advantageously for the two of you. If is comes up single, then you'd have to ask the IRS whether that's permissible since you were single for only 1/3 of the year.

Oh, one more thing, I think you can email questions to the IRS, so you don't have to wait on the phone forever...

One of my colleagues that I share my office with made a call to the IRS yesterday, (her employer from two years ago sent her a W-2 and was being a screwball!), anyways - her questions were taken care of in only 20-25 minutes! She only got put on hold four times! Incredible, if you ask me...
