I had originally thought that Precise Shot worked like 3E where you do not suffer the -4 attack penalty when firing into melee. It seems that in IWD2, you don't get a penalty when firing into melee. Instead, you get a -8 penalty when you are engaged in melee and you attack with a ranged weapon. If you have Precise Shot, this penalty drops to -4.

When I went through IWD2 the first time, it was rare that my archers were ever engaged in melee. With the Ranged Aggressive script, they tend to run away when in melee. My archers are my arcane spell casters anyway, so I take great care to keep them out of harms way. Even if they do get into melee on rare occasions, I make them run away and have my melee guys come to his aid.

In light of this, I'm thinking of not taking Precise Shot at all as I attempt to go through the game a second time. It seems that there are much better feats to take like Rapid Shot. Even a second rank in the ranged weapon proficiency seems better than Precise Shot.

I agree, Rapid Shot is much better and Precise Shot sucks big time. Using a ranged weapon in melee is never a good idea, AFAIK enemies also receive a hefty attack bonus to you if you don't have a melee weapon equipped when engagin in melee.
