Even though I've played BG1 and BG2 lots of times, I am still unsure whether ioun stones prevent critical hits. Does someone have a definitive answer on this ?

Anything worn in the helmet slot protects against critical hits, including ioun stones.

Anything? Are you sure? If that is so why do some helmets say: 'Special: Protects against critical hits' and some do not? And what about Jan Jansens Spectroscopes? They are worn in the helmet slot...

    It's anything. It's hard-coded into the engine.

Some helmets say that and the other things don't because the descriptions were carried over from BG1, where iirc all helmets had that description since they were the only things you could put in your helmet slot. Since ioun stones etc. shouldn't strictly protect you, they left it out of their item descriptions so it wasn't misleading.

I'll add to the voices saying it's anything in the slot. There's no effect or ability on any of the helmets that gives them Protection from Critical Hits, so it's clearly in the inventory slot. I've even tried it out by re-importing a BG2 character, putting an Ioun Stone on them (Dusty Rose, if it matters), and letting some of those gobbos in Irenicus's Dungeon wail on my AC -12 character until they got a critical hit. It got prevented.

I noticed that too! When my kensai wears Dusty Rose Ioun Stone he becomes immune to critical hits!

Protection from CH means that a character will get normal not doubled damage.
