Intel's X48 Chipset...what happened??

So I read awhile back that Intel released, or was going to release a new chipset soon after the X38 came out. The new X48 is basically the same, save for official support for 1600FSB.

The problem is, I can't find a motherboard that has the X48 anywhere. I snooped around, and found that Intel has delayed its release to let manufacturers clear their inventory of X38 boards...but I never found when the X48 would be available.

If it's going to be a year, then I'm not waiting...I'll settle for the X38.
But that brings up a question. The CPU that will go with it to begin with is an E8400 C2D with a 1333MHz FSB. I'd like to be able to upgrade the CPU to a quad core with a 1600MHz FSB in a few years, but that's what concerns me about the X38. Since it doesn't "officially" support the 1600MHz FSB, does that mean that is has a 50% of not working at all, or does it mean it will work...but it'll have the stability of a overzealous overclock? :rolling:

You can try the Nvidia nforce 780 or 790 chipset if you cannot decide. It is a bit silly to get an x48 only to find out that a bios update for a x38 is enough.

Do some gigabyte x38 boards not have an 1600 frontside bus? Checked their website and the answer is yes. So Asus boards shall not stay behind.

Asus does indeed have a mobo with (unofficial) 1600 FSB support. I wonder if they will officially support 1600 on the X38 via a BIOS update after the X48 is released. That would be a nice appology for the folks who bought a product with such a short lifespan. :rolling:

I found two gigabyte x48 boards at my favorite webshop. No date yet, but prices are around 235€. Make your willsave and wait for a x48. crossfire ready! But not, correct me if I am wrong, SLI ready.

SLI isn't really an issue for me. I don't plan on using a massive display, nor do I need bleeding edge tech driving hardcore FPS. Crossfire is good enough for me, even if it's currently inferior to SLI. Hell, I won't even plan on getting a second video card for awhile anyway.

As for waiting, I can wait until the middle of April, but that's it. :rolling:

The p45 prototype has made its debut.

Crossfire inferior? I am not going to debate that, but the catalyst 8.3 is released. Quad crossfire! Or two 3870x2. How will it end and more important, can we afford it?
