My son's HP PC is running windows XP.

Recently it had some sort of dramas where it would never get past the windows boot up screen. It would reach that point and keep resetting, visiting the obligatory windows failed to start correctly last time page...

Eventually I got the system working again. Not even sure how now. But I have installation problems.

Installed BG I and ToTSC, but it will not install BG 2
Installed CCleaner, Lazarus IDE, and Comodo updates (all directly from the internet), but it would not install a Java update.

I get kernal/dll type error messages. 'Unable to open installer' and stuff like that.

I can't even do a system restore because it says I am not an administrator even though I am.

    Any thoughts? Complete re-install?

The last part might be the key, and I'm surprised the BG1 installation even works.
First, check that your account actually is an administrator. Maybe you should try creating another administrator account, demoting your original account, rebooting, and then promoting your original account.
If it is an admin, then try going to "My computer" and right-clicking on the hard drive. Look at the security tab. Find the Administrator's group and make sure they have "full control" checked.
If you don't have a security tab, goto "folder options" and temporarily disable "simple file sharing").
I think if you are using XP Home you need to either boot in "safe mode" or download the "security configuration manager".

I did a quick search, and you'll need this if you're using XP home to get at the security tab. It's off by default and the interface to change that is disabled in Home to encourage sales of Pro.

instructions for two different ways to accomplish the same thing. Be warned, you will want to create a restore point before doing either. This is advanced stuff not intended for the average user, but for power users and pros.

Sorry if this is too technical, while I can usually gauge a person's skill level over the phone or in person, it's much harder on a BBS like this or Usenet.
