After approximately 3 years of having uninstalled BG1 from my computer (I know, I know -- why on Earth would I do that????), I'm not able to install it at all now. Here's the situation - I'd like to know if anyone can help me:

I've got the cardboard 5 CD pack (and TotSC), which, ages ago, installed just dandily. Today when I try to install, the auto-play brings up the splash screen, but when I click "Install" the CD whirrs for a few minutes and then crashes/closes.

I've checked for scratches, cleaned the CD (rubbing alcohol and Kleenex), deleted the old installation with regedit, even tried installing directly from the CD. No dice.

Now, when I tried to install direct from the CD I keep getting this error message:

    "D:SETUP.EXE

A device attached to the system is not functioning."

Ah, thanks for that abundant help Windows. So, does anyone know what's going on? I'd rather not have to reorder if there's something simple I'm just missing. Thanks ahead of time for any help anyone can provide.

Are you having this problem with anything else you try to install?

Nope. Just with BG1. I've checked around on the 'net and Googling that error message seemed to suggest there might be a VB dll file missing. I found and installed the supposedly missing file though, and still no luck.
