some guy by the name of Yakov, it was some messed up translation thing. Just reverse something you normally do in a Crpg and say that that thing does YOU!

    Example: "Experience gains YOU!"

Instead of the normal you gaining experience, in SOVIET russia experience gains YOU.

yeah, I hope you get the point.

    POST YOURS!!

Actually, there was one Simpsons episode about Branson, Missouri. There was a musical about "celebrities you thought were dead" called "That's Familiar". :shake: Here's two lines from the song:

So just sit back and watch our review.
In Soviet Union, review watches you.

The potato thing may have happened in the same episode at the end (backstage), I don't know.

And my contribution to this bizarre thread:
    Levels gain YOU!
    Spells cast YOU!
(This next one should be popular... )
    Monsters kill YOU!

Jigga, wasn't it a reference to the Family Guy episode "There's something about Paulie," about the mafia?

He gets a car from the mafia, and the navigation system is in russian... it says: "Left turn here... in mother russia, left turns you!" (<--- or something to that effect).

In Soviet Russia, Irenicus pwns you!

No, family guy and the simpsons are the ones making references to Yakov Smirnoff (is that his name?) All I know is that he was a great Russian comedian who made jokes about Soviet Russia.

In Soviet Crpgs, locks pick YOU!
Crpgs make message board topics about YOU!
    Evil butt kicks YOU!

Yakov Smirnoff was a very popular comedian in the 1980s -- he did a lot of standup and this syntactic trick was one of his mainstays. It went over well in the U.S. because they liked the constant jabbing at the innuendo that the Soviet Union was very intrusive into the lives of its citizenry (kind of like how Bush now listens to all phone calls in the continental US today ;) ) Smirnoff's schtick was that he was an immigrant / refugee from the USSR and was always flabbergasted by the freedoms and lifestyle he found in the US. Whether he really was a Russian immigrant or just a guy playing a role and faking an accent during his screen time is something I don't know.

Smirnoff was in a few 80s comedy films and was a frequent guest star on "Night Court". The whole Simpsons episode in Branson was a backhanded homage to "has-been" American celebrities, some other examples being Charo ("I shake my Maracas") and Mr. T ("Remember me, fool? I was BA Baracus!") If these sorts of former stars really are in Branson, I'm going there next vacation!

Okay, I'm surprised no one else picked up on this, but it is rather obtuse and tangential:

In Soviet CRPGs, 'a winner is YOU'

@Ofelix - "those who are ignorant of history are doomed to repeat it"; just cuz it's gone (and good riddance) doesn't mean we can't still laugh about it. :D

@Kuemper - Nah, not so much a Marxist joke as one about a totalitarian regime that had little to do with political ideals after a while. (C'mon, doesn't anyone else know about Babelfish? :) )
