Once you head off to Spellhold starting CH4, are you trapped in the straight story all the way until you Return to the surface from the Underdark in CH6 and meet Drizzt?

I didn't want to read the guide word for word and ruin the story... But it appears that is the way it is. Or can you get back to the shops and places in Athlatka after Spellhold but before you go see the Drow?

If not I'd better stock up on those +1 arrows and other stuff...

Nope, it's Spellhold and Underdark before you return to Athkatla.

    I would think so...
But I have all my extra wands, spells, arrows, and potions all stored at the Aventure Mart. I like to be able to get at them whenever I want.

Well if you use the Tuigan (?, talking about the 3-shots-per-round shortbow) bow with Imoen, you might want to stock up on a huge amount of arrows. I had about 500-1000 arrows when I got Imoen back, and I ran out of all of them just before I left the underdark. Though I must admit that this was the one game where I decided to kill every monster I could find, including the entirety of the drow city.

Still, I doubt you'll be needing much potions or wands. A few healing potions and a steady supply of arrows for Immy is all.

Edit: And Gopher knows what he says. You might not get back before leaving underdark, but you will have plenty of opportunities to shop and sell stuff along the way.
