All of this is spoiler so tread carefully.

Scouring through the questlist, I noticed there's several entries for Shawford Crale I've never seen before. Most notably, there's three different variants of the (last?) quest, "carried out SC's orders", "carried out SC's orders, going beyond the call of duty" and "carried out SC's orders ... and exceeded his expectations".

Any ideas how to reach those last two conclusions?

The quest is to get the mercenaries out of the pub. To carry out his orders, you just go and speak to them, this can lead to a fight but you've still carried out his orders.
To exceed his expectations, you actually have to get them to the pallisade. The easiest way to do this is to take the scroll that you find in the goblin caves to that bird who's the wife of the guy in the town (the leader you first speak to, I forget his name). She'll tell you that there is a traitor somewhere in town. The traitor is Phalen, he came with the mercenaries and is hiding in a house near Shawford. Not only do you get xp for finding, killing and reporting the traitor, you can then use the knowledge you get from talking to Phalen to blackmail the mercenaries into going to their posts.

    Hope that makes sense!

Actually, it will be a much more serious problem than that. You see, you can't leave the town except past the Palisade... and the goblins. You see, the Wicked Wench was the last ship in port, and it's not going anywhere.

I would take a little more care with your words. Once the Guard learns of your alliance with that traitor, Phaen, you'll be the ones thrown out of town - if you're not executed first.

If you remain here, then you will be considered to have deserted your post during wartime, and I will see to it your contracts are revoked.

Look, we're not trying to break your spines here - Shawford's put us all in a difficult position, and if we all pull together, we can all come out a little richer.

You're free to look for one - oh, and about your gold. Dereliction of duty makes your contract null and void, so you'll actually be fined the gold you already took in Targos' name... and more.

Actually, that doesn't really matter. Once the Guard learns of your alliance with that traitor, Phaen, you'll be the ones thrown out of town - if you're not executed first.

I wouldn't worry about gold right now. Once the Guard learns of your alliance with that traitor, Phaen, you'll be the ones thrown out of town - if you're not executed first.
Don't forget the Geoffrey dialogue in this. You get 600+900XP if you get them to report in. You can do it by implicating them with Phaen, or through conversation skills. I think 'exceeded expectations' refers to talking skills, and 'beyond the call of duty' to exposing Phaen. The first time around, you might want to attack them, because they *might* be worth the difference between 1500 and 900XP, and you get their items. The second time around in Heart of Fury, you're better off getting more quest XP;).

I did all that (expose/convince deal), but didn't see anything beyond "carried out his orders". Or it's my memory pulling tricks on me - the cutscene starts when you turn in the last part so it's not that hard to miss. Need to double-check.

Edit: So I did double-check. Yes, I got the "exceeded his expectations" response for doing the things described above. Sorry for the confusion.
