I'm almost ready to head off to SpellHold and get her. I was going to make her my one and only Mage, replacing Nalia. I wrote down the few spells she knew at the beginning of the game so I would know which to take with me and which I didn't have to when I go to save space. Does she know more spells by the time I get to her or just the same ones? I suspect she has more XP and levels but does she know more spells...

    Also:

If I take Nalia with me; When Imoen joins Nalia can get back to the Copper Coronet just fine right? No problems?

"Imoen" in Spellhold is not "Imoen" that you meet in Irenicus' dungeon. That is, the game has about 15 "Imoen" files for all her various roles in the game. Her spellbook will be empty of all the spell you gave her in Irenicus' dungeon.

That's the way the cookie crumbles. You can't change this and so don't worry about her spellbook. Nalia is a photocopy of Imoen anyway, at lower resolution, do you need her? or do you need both? You need to think about this for yourself.

Well I didn't add any spells. I knew she would be gone soon...
Will she have the same ones she started the game with? She had five level 2, 3 and 4 spells and four level 1 and level 5 spells. If she has them that's 23 spell scrolls I won't have to drag with me.

I really didn't like her much but my party from BG1 was all the main people: Imoen and the two pairs with Minsk and Jaheira. I wanted to finish with them. I added Mazzy and a self-made NPC Assassin.

Why oh why couldn't they have made Nalia a single class Mage? At least then you'd have a single reason for taking her over Imoen.

[IMG] But then she couldn't wear the elven chainmail armor right?
It says a pure mage can't use it but I never tried it out...

Um...why would you put Nalia in Elven Chain? Her thieving abilities are horrible enough as it is. And her being a pure mage would work out a lot better. There are already 2 other thief/mages and 1 bard in BG2, and only 1 plain mage(who's evil btw). Robes are much better for any spell caster, only reason I ever use Elven Chain is because it's stylish :) . Anyway, I sense this is getting off topic, so I'll shut up.

I put Imoen in chain at least. For I just about always have 2 mages in my group. The other one gets the robe of Vecna, and Imoen gets the chainmail. Mainly because I always change her looks to mage. A human female with a shining green almost silken like skirt/robe is a very beautiful thing to look upon. :)

The other part of the time, she wears the Robes of the Good Archmagi

Aces. Yes her spellbook has those and a few more because she has magically gained xp while being tortured by someone in Spellhold...

Don't worry about her spellbook, or her spells. They don't change much, and they are way better than lame Nalia's...

I usually use Aerie or Edwin as my main spellcasters.

I had both Imoen and Nalia in my first group, and they made a devastating combination, particularly after they went up the levels. When I first got Imoen back however, it did take a while for her to learn as many spells as Nalia had, so she was very much the secondary mage. Of course, if you're able to take scrolls to make up for that, you won't have the same problem.

I think that Nalia would be even worse character if she would be pure Mage (well, not sure about specialist), because 4 thief levels give her ability to use bows (a much better archer than pure mage), other thief weapons and armor and more hp's.
But definitely I agree with Lord Sarevok, that there are too many thief/mages in the game (only Yoshimo is a thief, who isn't also a mage)

I have never took only a thief-mage im usually going with jan and a mage, and IMO Nalia is a mage with some bad thief skills.

i find some good parties can not be as overpowered as evil or neutral ones... only because there is no good aligned tank mage!

just a question about an earlier post. How do you change your avatar thingy on Imoen to look like a mage robe?

Use ShadowKeeper. Simply change her appearance to look like a human female mage rather than thief.

I have to weigh in here -- speaking from powergaming terms, Nalia is your best bet for a spellcaster -- she can gain high levels and cast any spell, so in that sense she is a better choice than Edwin, who cannot cast divination spells. She's not as experienced a thief as Imoen, so she will be a more experienced mage -- she'll always be a few thousand XP ahead of Imoen. She'll advance further than Jan or Aerie as they're multi-classed.

From roleplaying terms, she's also a pretty good bet. If, like me, you like to play parties that would work (alignment-wise) she fits in pretty well to a good party -- a lot better than Jan or Haer-dalis. I prefer her to Aerie in a good party for the above powergaming reasons and the fact that she is not nearly as annoying from a role-playing point of view. I like to keep Imoen, though, because if I were good (as I usually am) I cannot see abandonning my sister to the big, bad world. Any good character would want to keep Imoen around, role-playing wise.

    That's a pretty long 2 cents -- sorry!

@Depaara- Ummm i hate to point this out but in terms of the BG2 spells divination is the worst spell set (or atleast the one with least in it) IMO.

IIRC what you get is basically -
Identify - You can use a bard, a high lore person, a backup mage, just pay for it.

Find Traps - Clerics have it.

Oraspoher (it's not that but the one that lets u see the whole map at once, but only outside).
It doesnt really help. It's high level but all you can see is the map greyed out not where all the enemies are.

    Basically divination is underpowered.
Also Edwin will always be the best mage choice (power terms) because he's got the amulet.

I got Imeon and changed her appearance to a mage.
Black is a good color for her.

She looks great in the Adventurer's Robe!

BTW- She had the exact same spells she started the game with, expect for 3 extra level 6 spells.

The Abyss - Perhaps in PnP but not in BG CRPG (wow that rhymes!)

Basically in BG series if you choose a specialist you can't cast spells from the opposition class/es to yours - scrolls or spells.
