[IMG] It may sound silly, but I have experienced the following thing with magic resistance.

For example take a creature with about 90% of magic resistance(a mind flayer)

In the mind flayer city(underdark) I experimented with my sorcerer, to learn something about the connection between the level of the used spell and the creature's magic resistance.

I tried 1st. 5th. and 8th. level spells and the result was...

    from 6 casts

1st. level spell affected target : 0 (magic missile)
5th. level spell affected target : 1 (sunfire)
8th. level spell affected target : 4 (Abi Dalzim's Horrid Wilting)

My question is: Does higher level spells gain any bonus taking effect on the target with magic resistance or not?(excepted the imprisonment spell which ignores MR)

I'm thinking it does matter that they are higher. Like your tests show the Horrid Wilting hurt them. I was using Sphere of Chaos on a large pack of beholders the other day and it was working. I don't think the spells do as much damage as they could do to a non-resistant enemy, but they still do something.

Well it used to matter what level your caster was!!! If you were over 11th level magic resistance would decrease on your target by 5% for every level above 11th. This is a great rule but I think it was eliminated in 2nd edition. I still use it in my games because it makes sense. The higher level the more powerful your magic is...

oh and with me it seems like magic missile works better than other high level spells. I don't know if there's a connection!!!

Parv, I think there is a bug with the Illithid party attacking Phaere in the Underdark, because before they showed up Sulfarein had cast some spell, which was a summoning spell I think. So all the illithids and the Umber Hulks were as summoned creatures, and therefore the Death Spell ignored there MR and killed them. I ... don't think it would work well on the Mind Flayers in the Illithid city.
