How is NPC joining level determined?

I know you can grab NPCs at different levels, but what determines that level?

Is it Protagonist XP?

Is it Protagonist level?

Is it party level?

I ask because I want to grab Coran on as low a level as possible, so I can have as much influence over his Thief Skills and proficiencies as I can.

Protagonist level.

 

Coran has two cre file. If you want lower level version (3/3), you will have to enter Cloakwood before you reach fourth level.

When you say "4th level" Raz, is that 4 total levels? My character is a 2/2 F/T right now.

I'm sorry, it's 5th level actually.
- fifth level in single class
- fourth (two classes) or third (three classes) level in multi-class

 

So, if my character reaches level 4/4, Coran should be 3/3, right?

What if my character is 4/4, has the XP to level up, but I don't level him up yet (squatting)? Will I still get 3/3 Coran?

 

I tested it and character's level for determining, which NPC's version you'll meet, is counted this way:

Single-class- you have only one class, so it's simple, once you reach level 5, Coran will be 5/5 level

Multi-class - lowest level + 1 (with F/T at 4/4 level you will meet 5/5 version of Coran; if you want 3/3 version of Coran, you have to be at max. 3/4 level with your character)

Yes, it works.

 

I've tested this, and it's average party level, with NPCs coming in at an even or higher level (never lower). Multi-class does seem to be treated as a level higher, but considering that they're a level lower due to splitting experience, it looks like they were trying to approximate experience level. So if your party is around level 4, you'll get a 5/5 Coran.

 

So, to get a lower Coran, I should squat the whole party after reaching level 3?

 

Just hurry to Cloakwood. Or just go ahead and GK the CRE file so he'll always have the build you like. Or use my NPC Remix. You've got more options than just level squatting (which is kind of pathetic, IMO).

 

Yes - Or get the scs mod at G3. there's a mod in the pack wich allow you to administer stats like profs and thief skills yourself. I can recommend it, but some (perhaps most?) will consider it cheating .

I thought NPC was determined by the average level of your party...?

So this means that only the protagonist level matters?

Also, I noticed that in regular BG1, if you start as a multiclass, NPCs will join you in level 2 already (at least Imoen will).
