I'm not sure about BG1 since I've only done it with BG2 (and only once). However, it might be fairly similar.

I believe the sounds must be recorded in .wav format. Each sound has to be named according to its use in the game. For example, if you want to make a "dwarf" sound set, your files would have to look something like this:

    Dwarfa.wav
    Dwarfb.wav
etc., all the way to the last sound.

Sound "a" can be the battlecry, sound "b" the death sound, etc. I don't know for sure what each letter stands for, but if you look in your "sounds" folder, you can try to guess using the existing sound sets. This would also tell you how many sounds to create.

I hope this helps. Hopefully someone more versed in this can help you further. Cheers!

I believe the convention for naming the files is the same in BG1 and BG2, in which case this post from the BG2 forum may help.

It's not, BG2 has many extra sounds. The naming convention for soundsets is listed in one of the readme txt files... either in the directory with the voices or the original game readme. Check that for details.
