And if it's not active, how can you make it so?

Also, let's say you want a dwarf to romance viconia. How do you do this?

Extremist's Romancing Guide has all you need to know. Just skip the walkthrough parts and go straight down to the "cheats" section.

Go into the Global Variables tab, drop to the bottom of the list and either add a VICONIAMATCH variable or edit it. In either case the value should be set to 1 to allow the romance (you can also do this for an elf or gnome).

You may also need to add a CHECKVICONIAMATCH variable and/or set to 1.

To see if the romance is active look at the VICONIAROMANCEACTIVE (or AERIEROMANCEACTIVE, or JAHEIRAROMANCEACTIVE) global variable. If theromance is active it is a 1, if completed it is a 2, and if you blew it the value is a 3.

That was very helpful, thank you!

Does this also work for mod NPCs, assuming they use similar codes, and globals? Just curious. I have some...evil ideas. Har har.

Yes, but most mod variables have prefixes, some are truncated, etc. But it's not that hard to find out what the variables are; they've probably been bandied about plenty in the mods' forums when people have had problems with the romance.
