I recently reformatted my C drive but left my D drive alone (where Baldurs Gate 2 and my other games are all installed). Most of the games survived the reformat fine and could be played without reinstalling a thing. The exception was Baldurs Gate II ToB. When I try to run baldur.exe or use the autorun on the cd, I only get the installation buttons on the splash screen and cannot play the game without a fresh installation. I only have a bit over 2GB of free space on my D drive and I don't really want to go through the entire installation, patching and modding process to make my current save game (which is right at the end of the game) compatible with a fresh installation. Anyway is it possible to mess around with the registries or something to make my computer acknowledge the prior installation (which is on the D drive)?

"It's a lot easier to destroy than to create." I don't remember who said it, but it's very true. Creating a registry entry...is best done by an installer. But AFAIK, you may not need the registry to recognize it to actually play the game.

Try creating a shortcut that points directly to BGMain.exe in your base BG2 folder, which is the executable that actually runs the game. Doing that bypasses the splash screen completely (and whatever misconceptions it may have about whether or not the game is installed). If it works, great; if it doesn't, I'd say you need to re-install.

No promises, but try to start your game using BGMain.exe, which is located in your BG2 folder. I don't think it checks your registry.

Heh. Looks like Fel beat me this time.
