    No. In theory hockey is non-contact.

    It's also not a game I have much time for as the rules to me seem daft. Like: only allowed to use righthanded sticks, only allowed one side of the stick to touch the ball, not allowed to shoot from outside the area etc, etc, etc.

    I used to play ice-hockey. Now there's a violent sport for you. ;)

    Field hockey guys, field hockey.

    You know, round ball, played on grass, short sticks with a funny J shape at the bottom, one side flat, the other rounded.

    Well, you knoe that an ice hovkey game is 3 x 20 minutes? Here in Finland, last saturday, one player got 55 minutes off in one game :) And this guy is usually a real gentleman...

    He got a liiitle pissed off at the refrees, and started mouthing off and the like.
    I don't have the details with me right now, but...

    [IMG] I like Hockey - TeenyS, believe me, being hit in the knees by a hockey stick hurts - even more so when you have to continue playing when you have dislocated your knee.

    Still - I can't play anymore. Though I wish i could, I have to stand in the cold watching or indoors sorting out lost property - or worse in the fitness room being humiliated.

    Hockey is my favourite sport - I think I should at least be allowed to have a go :cry:

    Playing hockey in school shouldn't be too violent, and my fondest phys ed memories from grade school are definitely during hockey games.

    As for the pros, that's where being too competitive tempts you into hurting the other guy.

    Bruised thumb? I'd say bruised shins or knees are much more common.

    Well, it wasn't ice hiockey, it was a close relatyive of the game, played with a ball and without any lines in the ice, called rink (Is it rink?) ball or something in English (Hey, any Finns know what kaukalopallo is in English?)
    I once broke my brand new hockey stick by getting tackled against the side, by getting the stick stuck into my gut. Guess did that hurt? Also, getting a ball (we played with a tennis ball that time) slammed into my throat once... Ah, the violence of all games played on ice.

    Even in elementary school.

    Well i use to play hockey and the sport is not really violent. Sure the odd person will break there collarbone or snap their neck, but stuff happens.

    On a side note never play rec hockey in Ontario, unless you are made of iron. When I was playing we would see one major accident about every other game, this included broken legs, arms or collarbones, fractured jaws or skulls, also you would see skates cut people in the throat, and back of legs. The worse accidents I have seen were one a kid that broke his spine, and another that alomst died from a skate cut to his leg.

    But hockey is not really that dangerous compared to other sports like football and bull riding

    I played "street hockey" for a year or so. I'm not sure what the broad definition for this type of hockey is, but where I played, it was basically ice hockey on inline skates (using ice-hockey-style sticks, and a special nylon-based puck). We played at our local skating rink (as the name suggests, it's often played on the street, but if you can find something less abrasive than bitumen on which to play, you usually take that option). There weren't any serious injuries in the time that I played, but you were doing well if you managed to get out of a game without any bruises. The worst three injuries I took involved me being hit in the throat with someone's stick, me being checked into a concrete wall (at almost full speed, resulting in some nasty grazing), and me being checked clean out of the rink at full speed (and being stopped by a steel pole... between the legs). Fun stuff.

    Hockey == Life

    And it's kind of a mix. Some games are awesome from the saves and plays. Others are just lousy, if it weren't for the full out brawls.

    There's something that just instinctively makes you reach for your binoculars or camera when you see sticks and gloves go flying.

    Hockey > you.

    Ice hockey is a violent sport -- this makes it my favorite winter olympics sport.

    I haven't played any field hockey (it was a girls' sport in every school I've attended...girls played field hockey while guys played la crosse (OT, but that's a really fun sport)), but I have played elementary school hockey. It's ice hockey without the hitting, ice, skates, or purpose, but with the same sticks. It is properly played in an abnormally shaped gymnasium with pillars every few feet. The goalie is the kid who chosen by pseudo-random eeny-meeny-miny-moe selection to stand sullenly in front of the net, which had holes large enough to allow many players to run straight through without contacting any worn string at all. High-sticking is permitted when the teacher/ref isn't paying attention, which is whenever the teacher bothers to show up at all.

    To the winner go the spoils, to the losers the taunting.

    Ah, to be 10 again. :rolleyes:

    Hocky? Violent!

    You big girls Blouse! :eek:

    Hockey isn't violent aslong as you keep your stick in front of you.

    I know someone who took an uppercut to the face.(Basically a very fast hit, above the ground, very acurate.)
    He got his lip split up to his nose. Not very pretty, believe me.

    I love hockey, it's way better then all the other sports we play at school.

    Netball = Booooreing
    Athletics = I hate athletics
    All the other sports are all right.

    Umm, hockey.
    My Arthritis tends to let m down a bit though :(

    Well, two players from my fave team are off from the games for a long time, because they both have a broken hand,. And their hands were hit witrh the stick WITH PURPOSE to incapitate them.

    That's not how it should be.

    Blood sports should be there because it is a fast and a hard game, not because "Oh, he's good, we need him off the ice"!!!
