As I may have alluded to in the past, I have a really bad physical reaction to extreme nerves - I feel violently ill and occasionally have other difficulties involving my bowels. I was just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for combating these effects, perhaps with drinks or non-prescription medications. Oh, and no illegal substances either.

I have such problems, too, but in my case I can deal with it when it's heart, lungs, head or sometimes throat. But when it takes my stomach, I'm practicaly powerless. Fortunately, there's almost always some coffee and some medicine around the house (gelatum aluminium phosphorici works like charm), but when I'm away I'd better get a coffee or two and head home ASAP or find a medical point to get some mint drops and then a coffee or two. But it's always incapacitating.

Note: Perhaps you should add some mint to the triple shot of vodka. ;)

Listening to really soothing/relaxing music. Helps me every time.

If you are prepared to risk lung cancer, a cigarette really helps too.

Yeah, that works for me to when I need to unwind (although I don't react nearly as fiercely) - music and a ciggie, preferably hot lemon tea too.

Quiet time alone and reading or doodling (with or without coffee) usually does it for me.

I would suggest a spot of weed, but you said no illegal substances.

Have a few games of pool and a pint down the pub with your mates, I always find this very relaxing.

Breath meditation. Actually, controlling your breathing is a way to prepare for a more detailed meditation or contemplation, nonetheless its very soothing in itself - and really not difficult.

The "weed" issue is only illegal if you smoke it outside the Netherlands. Smoke it here, and you can even get weed as a medical precription. :D

It's still illegal inside the Netherlands. It's just condoned, which makes it appear as if it's legal. But it isn't. You just don't get prosecuted as long as the condonement policy exists. Which will sadly be for a while, I think.

Yeah, that's what it OFFICIALLY says, but the reality shows that you can walk over to a police officer, with an unlit joint in your mouth, and ask him for a light. You know just as well as i do that the officer in question will only smile and walk away. :D

Condoned means just as much as "eat your heart out, we don't care". At least that's what it means overhere in Utrecht. ;)

That always helps me, though I ususally need two or three in a row to really work. The only problem with most of the other suggestions is the nerves usually only hit me in the way I mentioned when I'm waiting for my ex's to show up for my contact with either of my sons so it's a little difficult to go to the pub or listen to music.

As for alcohol, I forgot to mention that the Orders agreeed on specifically prohibit me from having alcohol for 24 hours before Contact.

It sounds like you have IBS (irritabable bowel syndrome) which is a condition that I have.

Coffee will not help you. My recommendations would be easy on lettuce and other harsh salad vegtables. Lots of fibre and peppermint oil capsules should help.

Also try come herbal teas with low tannin such as Bangal Tea and Red Bush tea from Africa. Though they are called 'tea' they are not actually tea! I Hope this helps.

Coffee will only help your nerves, so disregard my comment so far as actually helping your bowels goes. Speaking of "tea", however, the Chinese Pu-erh could also help you. It's mostly meant for better digestion and reducing fat after eating something heavy to digest, but I guess it could have some good effect on the problem you're having.

Actually, I agree with Chev this time...well sort of...

Caffeine for me calms my nerves down, while keeping me alert and awake at the same time. Some people prefer nicotine, some prefer alcohol, but I prefer caffeine! :yum: :rolling:

    Pot! :hippy:

I heard it does wonders for all sorts of diseases and it's just plain calming. It's legal in some parts of Europe I think, but if you live in the U.S. you are pretty much screwed.

Tea usually works for me - not so much the drinking (although that's fairly relaxing), it's more the comfort of the ritual of making it. Doesn't really matter what type of tea, so long as you enjoy it and take the time to savour it.

I also remember someone telling me about fresh licorice or licorice root working for them, but not sure how much stock I'd place in it. Unless you had it with some tea, of course.

Of course, that's only if you want to stay legal... :hippy: ...or sober.

Redbush is, indeed, a good drink to calm one down. Also, meditation, or gentle exercise (tai chi is good) can be immensely useful.

If you drink lots of coffee a day (more than 4 cups), you body gets used to the caffine intake you will find that you cannot cope witout coffee thus getting the 'calming effect' when you have coffee. It may be best for you to limit you intake and trying some 'green' or 'jasmine' tea.
