Hard disk recovery

    My hard disk at work went belly up and there is some critical data on that disk that I want to recover. Can anyone tell me which tools I can use to access the hard disk and get my files back? I do not care about the hard disk itself, as soon as I get my files back it will be destroyed anyway.

    If it's your work computer, I'd leave the recovery to the IT department. If you don't have one, try doing a google search for "hard drive recovery" to find the utilities or services you'll need. :rolling:

    Putting it in the freezer for a while and then quickly connecting it and copying data off it has been known to work. Google should tell you more.

    You could try some recovery utilities like SpinRite, or boot up in Linux and try copying over the data, if possible. I would not recommend the freezer trick, even if it has worked for some. Then there are companies that specialise in data recovery, you will get all the data back that is intact, but it will cost you a lot.

    That's actually what I did when my old HDD died. It worked just long enough the get what I needed... The ironic thing is, the freezer method increases the chances of catastrophic failure by introducing condensation/frost on the platters. :eek: :rolling:

    Okay, I have tried linux with a live-cd but that won't even recognise the device. I have tried googling for tools, but since the first 3000 links are from those downloadsites - which noone should trust - I thought I'd ask here.

    Also, I won't try the freezer technique since that would destroy the disk without any guarantee of success.

    I am going to keep on looking then.

    Well, there is a tool I know of, but it is pretty expensive.

    Around 1200 $ expensive, so you are probably not interested.

    Any decent computer store around here will copy any intact data off your drive for about $50. By far the quickest and best option if they manage to get everything off the drive that you want.
