NWVault has interviewed Jeff Carpenter, the author of the Rites of Ascension series of modules, which has made it to NWVault's Hall of Fame. Here's a clip:

    4) Could you tell us what are the main features of your modules that have attracted so much attention from fans?
From the feedback I've received, it seems that players enjoy the way in which the "Rites of Ascension" series resembles the paper-and- pencil RPGs in its pursuit of clues and its unfolding storyline. Players also seem to like the weaving of the side quests into the story and appreciate the more unique areas in the modules, including module- specific enemies.
    5) Was there any aspect when you were creating this module that posed an obstacle? If so, how did you overcome it?
In each of the modules, I attempted to create a balance between guiding a player through the expected series of events and allowing a player to choose his or her own path during play (including the potential for evil characters in each). In order to institute this balance, I had to design areas that allowed player freedom but still required certain tasks to be completed before moving on to the next (and more dangerous) scenes of each chapter.
