If you visit some community sites apart from SP you're probably already aware of this, but if not, read on. Yesterday and today several thousand sites were hacked, apparently by using an exploit in the phpBB bulletin board software those sites were using. Two of our hosted sites, RPG Codex and Duck and Cover, were among the sites that were hacked. Today, another notable RPG news site - RPGDot - has also been hacked.

The damage done to the sites varies from defacing (only replacing the front page index with a message from the hacking group) to outright deletion of all content / entire message boards. See this news post on RPG Codex for some more information.

What can I say about all this? I'm really mad that the hard work of so many people maintaining all those sites who got hit the hardest was destroyed, and I really hope there's some fitting retribution coming to the hackers responsible for it. How anyone can get any enjoyment from such wanton destruction is beyond my understanding.

It takes an idiot, granted. Script kiddie wars? Or just a completely random mindless bunch of idiots bent on destruction. I don't know. However, such idiots aren't typically oh so good at covering their tracks and there's a chance they will be brought to justice if the management of the hacked sites takes action.

I'm sure we would have been if we'd used phpBB like all those other sites. Fortunately we don't.
