Golems are making mincemeat of my party

I've made it below the Black Raven monastery and have to fight four golems. Even on the easiest difficulty setting they are completely destroying my party.

I need tips and tactics, but frankly, it looks hopeless. They are highly resistant to all forms of damage it seems and completely immune to magic. I have to fight them because I made a deal with the thief in the level above. He steals the treasure and they go hostile.

I'm hoping there's some trick to it, like putting something on the altar to make them non-hostile again? If such a trick exists I'm not finding it in the walkthrough. Gamebanshee's walkthrough doesn't even mention this level! :o

And I tried simply running away. If I go upstairs the monks go hostile on me and if I go forward I'm faced with duergar and an area transition that won't let me leave (I have to kill the dwarves maybe?).

    Any help would be appreciated.

I don't think it's possible making them non-hostile again unless by reloading a prior save.

You could try using an insivibility spell or have the whole party going into stealth mode together (put off your armor) to sneak past the golems.
So you might only have to fight the duergar while the golems stay out of sight.

But I would try the following:

    1) Kill the monks.
    2) Go back to the duergar outpost where you got the quest to kill the monks
    3) Collect the reward. If you didn't assist in creating the hell bolter crossbow with your smartest character before then do it now.
    4) Kill the duergar and loot them.
    5) Go back to the battle squares and finish all ranks for the very useful rewards. Your party should be far stronger now than on your first try.
    6) challenge the iron golems for a rematch

Iron golems don't have damage reduction against +3 weapons or better, are slowed by electricity and immune to magic AFAIR.
You can win at least three +4 or better weapons at the battle squares which will help to make the fight easier.

If your party is still too weak you can sneak past and return later to finish off the golems and battle squares. You have another chapter for gaining extra levels and equipment before you leave for Kuldahar and cannot return anymore.

RUN! Cast sanctuary, invisibility, use stealth, and run away! I never bother to fight them at that stage of the game, they are just..too powerful! I loot the coffin and then run away! It works! :shake:

Ofcourse once you are in HoF, and have a very special weapon to deal with kegs and constructs, they are the easiest massive XP you can find!

You have got yourself into a bit of pickle by being forced to fight them.

Standard tactics for the Iron Golems are to wait until after dealing with the duergar and to tackle them on your own terms with a lot of preparation. This would usually mean:
    - setting up a screen of summons
    - buffing your main warrior to the max
    - equipping your warrior with a big +3 or greater weapon
    - setting up other characters with any +3 missile weapons you can find.
    - sending in a speedy rogue to open the chest and loot the gear and hightailing it before the golems attack.
    - sending the buffed warrior in after the golems have targetted the summons
    - making sure you target one golem at a time
    - running around like crazy to avoid getting hit
    - if required, escaping upstairs into the Underdark to rest and try again if you can't beat all the golems in one go.

All this depends on the make-up of your party, but if you're unprepared for the fight (like you are) then it is probably the toughest battle in the whole game.

Going back upstairs and killing the monks is probably your best option from where you are (you have desecrated their holy site after all) because at least that will give you a chance to re-group before going back for the golems.

    Good luck.

I've not beaten them in normal mode - it is one of those strange places where the HoF version can be MUCH easier!

I managed to kill 2 of them in normal mode once (a long time ago - my melee characters had <10 hit points after the 2nd kill) - but I don't think I could take all 4 out without exiting the area for a long rest...
    ...I've not tried since.

Solution = Monty Python and the Holy Grail: "Run Away!"

You could always go back and warn the standing Archimandrite about the thief, even after he stroke a deal with you. He'll be promptly caught, and the guardians won't be awakened. Unless, that is, you absolutely want the golems' treasure hoard for yourself.

The treasure is not all that great anyway. A spiffy flail with a really good history, but sadly, which is not very useful. Not really worth the trouble, I would say.

There is. Bracers of Defence +4.

And the flail is Shackles of Roa +1 (flail, 33% chance of a +2 strength bonus to the wielder after a hit).

Then there is a random item too. All in all 3 items. Nice loot moneywise I mean :)

Sorry if I bother somebody with my comments, but none of normal or HoF supposed a trouble for my party.
Like Harby said, you don´t go down there unprepared and ignoring the fact that ANY golem should be hit by +3 weapon if you want to hurt them.
ITOH,(and a think there is a threat around here about it) it is NOT the hardest figth in the game, because you don´t have to deal with enemy magic, or summoned undead(like the six followers).
Just follow the Harby instructions and you´ll be fine.

That's what I ended up doing, and this time I was able to area transition (wasn't working on my first attempt for some reason).

My party was buffed to the nines. Summons all over the place, etc. Summons died in about one hit and no one in my party had +3 weapons. Why? Cuz I got bored doing the Battle Squares and just moved on. This is my first time through the game, so... how was I to know? This game is bloody hard.

Isn't there a Druid or Cleric spell that gives you a +3 spell weapon? Probably not enough for those 4 big boys, though. Come back after getting some loot from the Underdark; tons of +3 weapons there.

Windrunner, you just get the words out of my mouth(er... fingers).
I remember my first time( that was a hell) but after figthing those eigth chambers, the golems seems a "walk in the park" compared with the last chamber.
Funny thing, I don´t remember why it was so easy...

    A. It's not necessary to kill the Iron Golems to continue to the next area.

    B. Like others have said, +3 or better weapons are necessary to avoid their damage reduction. And if you go to the next area, the Drow Underdark, you'll find plenty of +3 weapons for sale.

    C. Then, prior to leaving the Underdark, you can go back and use all those +3 weapons to whup the Iron Golems.

My general combat strategy for the Golems was to break out the +3 ammo and keep a bunch of my party out of melee range and outside of their gas attack's range. At the same time, I'd send in my two toughest tanks and hit a single Golem at a time.

Oh, and also, what I've always tried to do is to get them to chase me around so that I can try to isolate one Golem at a time. Also, use some summons to keep some of the Golems busy for a short time, but don't expect the summons to survive long or inflict any damage. Just enough of a delay to seperate one IG from the others so that your tanks can engage one at a time without getting overwhelmed by the others.

The IG's are beatable in normal mode. It just requires the use of some smart tactics.
