Any opinions as to the best character to create to start in BG1 and then be imported into BG2? I'm still early on in BG2 but I've got BG1 on the shelf yet to play. (Actually, I've played two different characters in BG1 up to chapter 2, but then moved to BG2 just because I couldn't wait.)

My ultimate goal is to (eventually) play through both with the same character, so I'm wondering what everyone's thoughts are on this.

[IMG] Don´t be surprised, but I rank th lvl-6/lvl* ighter-thief tirst, followed by the dc lvl-6/* fighter-mage and fighter-cleric.

In BG it was best to dual from fighter to whatever class at lvl 6 for you´ll get the extra prof slots of the fighter then and were all active when reaching Durlags Tower. The main advantage is that your chars stats improve from using the tomes (all stats +1, wis +2!).

Your char is already dualclassed when imported to BG-2 (the low fighter class isn´t really disadvantageous) and what I like best is that you can have grandmastery and ready weapon-style specialisation and some prof slot in a back-up weapon.

I would suggest going with a multi fighter/cleric or fighter/druid. Well, for BG, I'd say fighter/cleric as duid spells completely sucked in the origional (don't know about TotSC as I had told Jahiera to hit the bricks long before then). Anyway, getting back to a point of some sort, multi class fighters clerics are nice for low and high level games because they are powerfull in both. And multi fighter/clerics(druids) find the least hinderence from being multi classed at higher levels as in BG2. A dual classed character would work, but I don't like dualing at level 6, even though the hp difference for fighter/clerics wouldn't be that much now that I think about it. Anyway, I'd suggest a multi (or possibly dual) class fighter/cleric. Just an opinion though.

[IMG] I forgot to mention: I had BG-1 ToSC with the 161000 xp-cap/ You can have all the prof-benefits I mentioned last RIGHT FROM THE START in BG-2. I also forgot to mention that you can choose a kit for your first class when importing to BG-2(for ex a kensai-thief...kensai-mage...)

I checked the tables: a level 6 fighter just needs 32.000 XP (he improves later, but wasting 32.000 more points will just bring you improved hit points and rescue throws :D but no extra prof-slots - these improve too when you switch to another class).

So you can reach: lvl-9 as a thief (110.000 xp); lvl-8 as a mage (90.000 xp, missing lvl-9 by 6000 XP :( ); lvl-8 as a cleric (110000 xp). All in all not too bad, isn´t it?

Hmmm, sounds interesting... I'm maybe leaning to the fighter/cleric because I'll need pratice in defensive spells before I get too far into BG2. (My gut instincts are still telling me just hit 'em with Magic Missles and Fireballs, and it's getting me killed early on- not a good thing.) Besides the start of BG2 seems to be filled with Thief-like NPC's, so I don't think I'd miss thieving skills in BG2 and I can build up Imoen's theiving skills in BG1 no matter what they did with her dual class in BG2.

I'm also thinking of maybe going straight fighter in BG1 and then going to a kit in BG2. Which brings up a question- what class(if any) from BG1 can "kit-over" to Monk in BG2?

My main problem however, is I can't seem to stick to one character (or game even). I got BG1 a few weeks ago on sale for $15 bucks just to see what the fuss was about. Within a week I had TotSC and BG2 installed. I've started over so many times in both BG1 and BG2 because I keep thinking "maybe if I made my character THIS instead..." instead of getting it through my head that there IS NOT a best character class, each has strong points and week points, and sticking with what I've got. Anyway, sorry for the aside (and that atrocious last sentence).

[IMG] Unfortunately the monk is a separate class in BG2 so you can't kit over to it. I rolled up a mean tank in BG1 and kitted to a kensai. Now I can't decide whether to dc to cleric or thief. Crom Faeyr is great, but I'm hoping for better swords in Throne of Bhaal.

[IMG] There is no really good thief in BG-2, not if you ever played a dc fighter-thief yourself :D However, I miss a really kick-ass fighter mage in BG-2 and I think tha cleric quests in BG-2 are really stupid IMHO.
Oh, your let´s-try-this problem is somehow familiar to me :D
