[IMG] I noticed something odd about the Goblin Fortress Gates...

No matter what you do, you cant disarm the arrow traps on the bridges, nor can you take out the war drums with ranged weapons or spells. At least I cant seem to be able to do it and my chara has more than 4 points in disarm and spot and whatnot.

Ive tried everything... I tried alt+4'ing the bridge so the triggers showed up, and putting on stealth to sneak onto the bridge and disarm them, and I tried outright walking onto the bridge to disarm them. Each time, the enemies would run across and attack.

With the drums, the only thing my archer does is try to cross the bridge to hit the drum, instead of firing from across the canyon; but she can attack the goblin archers this way.

Well...how well can someone take out a drum with a ranged weapon as apposed to a melee weapon? much easier to cut it open with a knife than an arrow. I spose it should just have 30 hp and take 1 life per arrow shot because you can of course ruin drums with arrows after a while...

Also, perhaps you cant disarm the traps because they are magically enchanted by the many goblin shamans in the area. seems likely that with that much magic available to create such traps, a lvl 10 or so thief still shouldnt be able to disarm it, especially if that IS their HQ...dontcha think?

I dont know about the traps really since I generally have someone hidden walk over the traps to spring them first, so they dont interfere when I really attack.

As far as the drums are concerned, they can be hit by ranged weapons. The problem generally arises witht the fact that they aren't clearly exposed. So the AI will make your archer move till he can see it fully.
To compensate for that you will most probably have to get one of your hidden charecters to run around the waiting orcs and to the drum before returning. Then attack it.
Crossbows are the best since they do more damage. All three drums can be hit in this manner.

Yep, the drums can be hit by ranged weapons, no prob!
They can also be hit by spells, but only by certain area-of-effect-spells... For instance, you can't throw a magic missile or chromatic orb on it, because you can't target them. But you could throw in a fireball or two, causing a lot of damage to the drums... (question is: do you want to spill two spells on those loser-drums...?)

Besides, leave the drums until after they summon everone to the battle, more EX for everyone.

Not in the battle against Trugnuk. Things are hard enough as it is without having to worry about worg riding goblins appearing out of nowhere right on your weakest member's ass.
The others I let ring long and hard but that one I always have to take out with bolts.

By the way, has anyone let the drums inside the the fortress warrens be beaten? I almost always find them unprotected and just take 'em out before moving on.

Argh. You can easily destroy the drums inside the warrens, but you first have to know they are there.

Just a couple of days ago I found a party of orcs sleeping. Wow, easy pickings, I thought. I probably should have suspected is was not so, since IWD2 does not make things easy :) Anyhow, I scouted with my bard for some way behind them for reinforcements, did not see anything. I attacked them, one of the orcs runs away. I try to kill it, no luck, since range weapons are apparently not worth a damn in this game. Shortly I have the worg riders plus a couple of trolls on my back. Things go downward fast from here.

As to the traps on the bridges: I was not able do disarm them either (although I had 11 as skill check). I thought that was pretty surprising, but then, it was not much damage. I took one of the drums out with missiles (bolts + bullets), no problem.
