I have noticed that in IWD2, unlike in BG1/2, party members never get chunked in normal combat, and when they get chunked by other conditions they can be brought back to life. In BG, a chunked character was gone for good, as its portrait was removed from the party.

I have came across the following interesting situation in my current game, playing a no-reload mode. In the middle of river cavern battles with the hook horrors, one of my characters gulped a cursed potion of invulnerability (didn't notice the "strange smell" in the description, and had three of them, so I did not suspected anything) and was cursed with petrification. The character died having the portrait grayed. A couple of rounds later the character died again, exploding into chunks, yet the portrait was still there, with -10 HP.

I thought it was possible to resurrect (he was an elf), so I payed some 15,000 gp to find it did nothing. I presumed he was gone for good, and made plans to recruit a lvl 1 character in the wandering village as a replacement, but in the black raven monastery I came across a stone to flesh scroll for sale, and decided to try one more thing. I went back to the place where he was petrified and cast the scroll targeting the portrait. To my surprise, the character came back to life with 1 HP.

Are you sure you are set to hardcore rules instead of normal difficulty? BG behaves the same way on normal difficulty.

I'm playing normal difficulty, the description is: The game uses core D&D rules during combat.

The single difficulty adjustment I made is Max HP when leveling.
