    How would you call it? I thought Ghetto Blaster was a pretty common term (although this one looks quite smallish for a ghetto blaster), or are those things only called that in the Netherlands?

    I've certainly never heard of it being referred to in those words, and I imagine it'd be ultra un-PC to be called that in the US. Made me chuckle seeing it described like that there too. :lol:

    Ghetto Blaster is a term out of the 80s. My mum still calls any radio a ghetto blaster, although I think the term should be reserved for any oblong shaped stereo that can just be carried on one shoulder. That was portable sound for the pre-iPod, pre-Discman, pre-Walkman crowd.

    Ghetto blaster was (maybe still is) a pretty common term in the US; otherwise maybe boom box. I think what Kit is referring to is that it was called a "ghettoblaster" when most everything else was not in English. So is "ghetto blaster" the common term in the Netherlands?

    I call it a ghetto blaster, but like Harbs said, it's a term from the 80's which probably only stuck with the 80's crowd (just like I call every portable mp3 player a Walkman). Like I said, it looks pretty small for a ghetto blaster, but it still has the same basic design, so I would refer to it as a ghetto blaster.

    But I actually have no clue whether people born after the 80's would call it a ghetto blaster around here, or what they would otherwise call it.

    In Flemish the term is used to indicate what Harbs said: "any oblong shaped stereo that can just be carried on one shoulder".

    We don't use "blender", we use "mixer". :D From my experience, Dutch is being positively invaded by English words.
