    Has anybpdy read this book? One of my favourite authors (Bernard Cornwell) says it's the best book he's ever read. That's more than enough reason for me to get it. I'm just wondering what everyone else reckons to it.

    It is definitely up there with one of the best books I have ever read. It's probably in my top 10 books of all time (if I could ever come up with a list like that). I'm fairly sure that you would like it.

    Mate book rox! Will change my nick to Spartan :) Sadly I've been informed that writer doesn't hold same level of awesomeness throughout the other 2-3 books he wrote :/ Damn shame

    Yeah, it's a one hit wonder. His other books are rubbish, but this one has such good source material that is hard to stuff it up too much.

    @HB

    I agree. Which of his others have you read? Tides of War was pretty crappy but Bagger Vance was just painful. I have Last of the Amazonz but can't seem to get myself to start it.

    However, Gates is still the best work of historical fiction I've ever read, second only to Shogun by James Clavell.
