    A large article has been posted recently at GameSpy, looking into the concept and practical performance of game ratings, as well as the surrounding controversy. Here's an excerpt from the first section, devoted to Japan:

    The very first system of game content ratings was established in Japan in 1991. They were created in response to the proliferation of adult games on the PC platforms that were popular during the dawn of the decade. While pornographic PC games had been popular since the early '80s (and, it should be noted, a few now-respectable publishers dabbled in this market around that time), the numbers of such games being published began to balloon during the early '90s. Many such games had completely innocuous-looking covers that betrayed the explicit content contained within the actual software.
