    EDIT: If the subtitles are coloured, VLC can't read them.

    VLC can't read some of the fancier subtitles properly (they'll display as normal subtitles instead, sometimes on top of each other). Media Player Classic can read just about any fancy subtitles you can throw at it, and is my choice video player under Windows.

    Anyway, PowerDVD and WinDVD are probably the best, but those are not free.

    I'd disagree, they're both too clunky for my tastes, VLC and Media player classic are a lot cleaner, sleeker, more customizable and use less resources.
