Forum News; What to Do With?

    [​IMG] As you've undobtedly noticed if you check any news posted on SP, we've been posting a lot of it lately. A big lot. A ton even. Right now it's all a mix of forum news, regular news, site news, etc. Too much of it all.

    While separating the other news doesn't really make sense, I think separating the forum news would. What I'm proposing is a separate forum for the discussion of forum news; all the currently posted ones would be moved there too. Along with this, I'd put up a separate index page for forum news - like the front page now, only there'd be only forum news there. So we'd have the current index with all the news EXCEPT for forum news, and say index_forums.php with ONLY forum news.

    I think this is the sanest solution, but if anyone has any better suggestions, post them.

    Assuming you can do it, I'd suggest taking it one step further:

    Within each forum, create a sub-forum for news posts. So there would be a Dragon Age News Forum in the Dragon Age forum, etc.

    That way, it would be easier to find the news topics you are interested in. For example, I don't own NWN, so I have no interest in NWN news. And if I look at a news forum cluttered with topics I don't care about, I might miss those items I'd actually want to read.

    Subforums are not possible with UBB unfortunately... it'd make sense to keep news like that if it were possible though. On the other hand, people would have to check 3 forums (or more) to get all forum news, and I don't think there's any way to make a stream for the forums front page from 3 separate forums.

    Is there a way that you could personalize it? Like Splunge, I do not own NWN, so if there was some sort of check box system, where you could mark each type of news that you want to recieve.

    If anyone understands, just signal by rephrasing my words into English. :sleep:

    That's what I was afraid of.

    Tal, I think you've mentioned before about switching from UBB to something else (I don't recall what, though). Would this "something else" be able to accomodate subforums?

    As far as checking several forums to get all the news I'm interested in, personally I wouldn't have a problem with that.

    Why not make a seperate sticky in each gaming forum with their respective forum news.

    That could be a good idea but only for the latest one news item. The totality of news items would have to be stored elsewhere for proper archiving and the like. However, it would still involve cross-forum posting, as some people would comment on the news in the sticky and some in the news forum. Or the sticky could be a closed topic, edited each time a new forum news item for that game is posted (or having a new post added but without opening the thread), and with a link to the "commentable" version. But as Tal says, separating Forum News from other news in the News forum seems necessary.

    We'll be switching to a fully PHP board soon, UBB is simply too big to be manageable any more. Still, subforums would only make sense in a separate news forum still, so it wouldn't make much of a difference.

    Well, I don't think splitting the game news in different forums is good. Some comments on one news item are referencing to posts for another game news, which is easier to note if all the news is in one forum. But indeed, the site news should be separate, so it doesn't get lost in the other news.
