I've done a search on this topic and read all the comments, but I still cannot get this guy to die. I make it through the demons OK, and get Irenicus badly injured, but then he kills both my mages before they can get their enfeeblement spells off. Have been at this one portion of battle for almost 6 hours today and nothing I do seems to make a difference. I've been sending my fighters in to whale on him while he's in the orb and at the same time have my mages do "remove magic" and "breach" (don't have a pierce magic). He then comes out of the orb for a little bit and my fighters do some good damage, but then he summons one of those scimitar wielding guys, puts one of my fighters in a maze and then we're done for. It happens this way every time. I've not had any trouble with the previous Irenicus battles before and I've used the same strategy. Especially with the orb....if I just had my fighters whale on him, he effentually took heavy damage. Not this time. I'm using all the protection spells that I have, except I don't have a Protection from Magic Scrolls. Advice?

On top of all protections, he might be using some sort of illusion which makes targetting him difficult. Try casting true sight or similar.

It would be helpful to know what your party is, what weapons you use etc.

I remember having similar difficulties with my very first ever Irenicus battle before winding up in the abyss. But that last one never was such a problem. As said, it would help a lot if you could tell the npc´s and weapons you are using.
Now the first (before abyss) he died within less than a second thanks to 2 spiketraps by Haer´Dalis.
The second (in the abyss)time I just fought him off with my lvl 21 protagonist sorcerer... 1 timestop, imp. alactricity, 1 spellstrike, 2 comets and 1 horrid wilting made nice work of his minions... he died about 10 seconds later after i found him hiding a little ways in the south. :hahaerr:

The final battle you don't actually kill him, you get him to 'near death' then it starts a cut scene, with dialog, try talking to him. Or you may have reduced him past 0 hit points at which point you'll have to cast a healing spell on him

Thanks all for the responses. I think what I may be doing is that when Irenicus summons the scimitar guy, I have my team ignore him and continue to stay on Irencus----hence he cuts us to shreds. I'm fairly new at these games so I'm learning as I go... But here's the weapon breakdown....

Fighter-- Warblade +4, Adjatha, The Drinker +2 (not using)

Valygar---Lilacor, Mana Bow +4 (not using for final fight)

Minsc---Silver Sword +3, Hearseeker +3 (not using for final fight)

Jaheira -- Staff of the Woodlands +4, Spear +3, The Impaler (not using for this battle)

2 mages with an assortment of wands (lightning, fire, etc.)

Hope I get better as I do more games.. What would be the best game after this? I've also done Icewind Dale. I thought I should do either The Throne of Bahl or Neverwinter.. Does anyone know which is better? Thanks all....

  6. If you want to complete the BG saga I recommend Throne of Bhaal. I just ordered NWN today :)

When you've killed the demons, spellup, summon things, and then go after Irenicus. His regeneration rate in the slayer form will be high, so take down protections with ruby rays and warding whips. Then cast Minor Meteors and keep chucking them at him while your fighters do the job. Lower resistances followed by attack spells are nice if you have them. And use that staff of the woodlands for shambling mounds and any other items with special effects.

Yes, his regeneration rate in Hell will be too high - if you save the game with Irenicus in the area! It's a bug.

Advice - reload the place before you've opened the TearDoor, open it again, and don't save the game until you kill Irenicus!

Thanks very much everyone. SUCCESS AT LAST!!! (I used True Sight and this time got my fighters on him very fast and just kept at it....he never summoned the scimitar guy. What's confusing is that while they are whaling on him, the team is saying that the "weapons have no effect"---but they do. This time I watched Irenicus's status and as he was "badly injured" and "near death", my team was still saying "my weapons have no effect". So if one doesn't check his status, they could have the party switch weapons or pull back or try spells, etc.,to try to do more damage. This time I ignored what they were saying and just kept hitting him and it worked. I really enjoyed the game...and I think the storyline is better than Icewind D. And....I must say the cut scene at the end was quite spectacular. Thanks very much for all your help!

  10. Not to nitpick but...
most of what you said there, is from ToB.. this is the SoA forum...

I have to admit, everytime I've managed to keep my computer/os up long enough to hammer through BG2, Irenicus was fairly tough. At least, he was when you smack him into Hell; never was all that bad once your fighting him in Hell.

True sight works wonders. Spell Strike does too, as well as Breach.

But I traded all that in for a Killsword...

DeBhaal, you´re right of course. Though technically I am playing SoA, I only have ToB installed. ;) He was more of a nuisance with just SoA though.

  13. Forashi, that doesnt matter of course.;)

Read the front of this forum... it says that no ToB material is to be spoken of...

Just pointing it out, before your mistake is shown to you by someone in authority ;):)

[IMG] Well now that Forashi managed to pollute the whole topic with ToB material I can't do much about it. I can't move it since it was not the topic starter who posted in the wrong forum. I could only delete everything Forashi posted, but then I'd need to delete all DeBhaal's too.

For the future Forashi, read the forum descriptions before you post. No ToB spoilers are allowed in this forum. No ToB material of ANY KIND is allowed in this forum. It's for SoA only. That means the game WITHOUT ToB installed.

  15. Tal, It wouldnt bother me if you edit out the Quote, so there isnt any problems with that...

Ill even do it if you would rather that :shrugs:

[Nah, forget it. I'll just move the post. The guy got his answer already anyway.] -Tal

had my (hasted by Jan) friends kill his friends and i whacked toe on toe when Viconia casted greater rescurration on me see you in hell Jonoleth (wait... he is already there)

    3. solution - why it was so easy...
The Wizard-Slayer colmulates a 10 procents spell failure for each hit and then any mage is a wozzle...
the ending fight in BG 1 was ten times harder

It is easier with a good party as you can just bombard the demons with holy smites and lower resistance, dispel, hack 'n' slash, you know, usual stuff, almost like dragons...

Good party evil party really doesn't make a difference. You can spend all those spells on the demons ("you can just bombard the demons with holy smites and lower resistance, dispel, hack 'n' slash, you know, usual stuff"), or you could of course summon a few creatures. when the demons are busy with the creatures send everyone down(south). The demons won't follow you, but Irenicus will teleport down, and you won't even have to fight the demons.

@cog: At least somebody understands wizard slayer is one of the most powerful kits in the game. Most people think they suck, or at least from what I've heard

Wizard Slayers are okay but they are for a certain type of player I think

(Hang on, scimitar wielding guys? Does he mean djinni?)

And actually the demons will follow you, after they've killed the summoned creatures they wander a bit and often will see your back-line fighters (Archers/Mages/Clerics) and trundle along and attack

Well 8people, if they do follow you then you are doing something wrong. I did the final fight approx. 10 times that way and they never followed me.
