Final Fantasy VII Rebirth PC Review - A JRPG Masterpiece, Now Polished to Perfection

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has finally made its way to PC after a long wait. Originally launched on the PS5, it was hailed as one of the best games of last year. Given that Square Enix's last PC port, Final Fantasy XVI, left fans a bit disappointed, everyone was holding their breath to see how Final Fantasy VII Rebirth would perform on PC. And honestly, the port has blown past every expectation I had when it comes to technical quality and performance.

Right off the bat, it includes all the modern PC features you'd hope for, like DLSS, FSR, and other upscaling options. There's also a wide range of graphical settings to tweak, letting you fine-tune the experience to your liking. The PC version even improves on the PS5 release in areas like lighting and texture streaming, on top of the expected upgrades in performance. It's also impressively scalable, running well on both low-end and high-end systems. While I didn't spend much time testing it on the Steam Deck, videos I've seen show it's playable there too-though, naturally, the experience isn't quite as smooth as on a full PC or PS5.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth's PC port is a triumph, setting a new benchmark for how console-to-PC transitions should be done. Packed with modern features like DLSS, FSR, and scalable graphics options, it not only matches but surpasses the PS5 version with improved lighting, texture streaming, and performance. The game runs smoothly on a wide range of hardware, from high-end PCs to more modest setups, and even shows promise on the Steam Deck. Quality-of-life upgrades, such as fast-forwarding cutscenes and a beginner-friendly mode, make it accessible to all players. While minor visual quirks and occasional stutters persist, they're overshadowed by the game's technical polish and immersive gameplay. Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is a masterful JRPG, blending action and turn-based combat seamlessly, with a story that's both nostalgic and refreshingly new. This PC port is the definitive way to experience one of the best games of the year.
