I have read as many past threads on the final battle in hell as I could find, but so far things have not gone well. The demons are easy, but I just can't seem to stay alive long enough to kill Irenicus.

My party consists of Minsc, Jaheira, Aerie, Imoen, Jan and my female fighter, Mina.

The threads have mentioned Breach and Pierce Magic spells, both of which I have, among all the other protective spells mentioned. The threads also mention Time Stop, but no one in my party is high enough in levels to cast it. Can I still win this without it?

Obsolutely. I have never used Time Stop to defeat Irenicus. Worst case scenario is you get into a battle of attrition. There's no way he's going to take out six fairly high-level characters. My strategy:

    1. Run!

Straight south down into the corridor you went into to the challenge. Irenicus probably won't follow you, although all the demons will. By funnelling the demons into that corridor, you'll get past them relatively unscathed.

    2. Bring down Jon's defenses

There are many ways to do this. Breach and Pierce Magic will work, but consider others, such as Kelban's (sp?) Warding Whip, Ruby Ray of Reversal (if you have it - I believe that's level 8, so you could). Also, some of the lesser spells will meet with some success as well. Throw in a True Sight to get rid of his invisibility, and I've even been able to get rid of some stuff with Dispel Magic, although his level is higher than yours, so that will be a hit or miss proposition. The most important thing is to keep all of your melee fighters - including your PC in this case - up front and pounding on him. Sure, a lot of the hits aren't going to get through, but by keeping your melee characters on him, your spell casters will be able to bombard him with spells every round.

    3. Slayer time!

If all else fails and your PC is going to die, turn into the slayer. The slayer is immune to most of the nasty stuff that Jon can cast your way(except time stop) and you should be able to whack him easily.

Remember, although Irenicus has many spell protections, they have a time limit on them, or can be dispelled. He does not have an unlimited arsenel of protection spells (or any spell for that matter) so with a bunch of healing potions, you should be able to wait him out.

    Thanks Aldeth,

I'll keep trying until I get it right.

As for turning into the Slayer...I seem to have read that doing that will make my character die anyway. Any thoughts on this?

Turning into the Slayer kills you after a certain amount of time but you get a few warnings (the battle text says "you feel your control slipping") before it actually happens. Turning back to human takes care of the problem.

Still no good, sometimes I can't even get past the demons without everyone dying, other times it's a breeze. I read on an old thread that, before putting the last tear in place, you should summon everything possible, but another said that anything summoned at this time will be negated upon Irenicus' appearance.

Your summons aren't negated although if you're having trouble with the demons that means you're not high enough level to summon anything really useful [snip]. But try and summon as many allies as you can and place them in the area Irenicus and co appear in. Then trigger the final Tear. As soon as the bad guys show up, have the party run for it while your summons' do battle with the demons. They won't last long but you ought to have the opportunity to blast the area with enough spells to kill at least a few of the demons. Your summons will die as well but they're pretty much just slowing tactics in this fight anyway.

Aerie, Imoen and Jan: all in the same party??
How much money did you spend getting scrolls for them?
You will have to tell us what level your chars are. If every one but the multi-class are at 16 or above then you should have an easy enough time.

Get the fodder in place and your party moves west to keep out of sight. PC pushes the door open and runs away. Prot fron Evil 10' radius is essintial beforehand.
Have Minsc use the +5Halberd from Underdark, Impaler for Jaheira, Celestial Fury and Vorpal or Equaliser for you fighter. Gensen for Imoen, Brusers for Jan. Aerie keeps the fodder coming till the demons are down.

When Jon goes south after the demons are dead get TrueSight up and all the spell the removing spells on Jon. Actually you can form a contingency with all the spell removers now after the demons are dead. Thus making sure that they affect Jon.

Shrikanth: I've never had any problems getting scrolls. I enjoy using magic in SoA, so I usally go for 2 mages + Jan. Though this is slightly off topic :yot:

As for killing Irenicus, I'd go with Prot. from evil 10', haste, defensive harmony, bark/stoneskins, blur etc. whatever you got. Use potions too. Storm Giant Strength, Invurnability ie.

I usally split the fighters in 2 groups and go on 2 deamons each. In the meantime, keep mages behind casting for all they're worth. Since you got Aeire, perhaps you could make a Sequencer with Healing in it.

Also, übering up a mage with Improved Mantle + all the prot. spells there is might work.

    Keep on meating ;)

I got him, after several tries. Each time got a little easier, until finally I was able to get it right.

Actually the fact you have three wizards in your party can(could have) help(ed) you a lot. Use protections on your fighter characters, and summon many creatures. Destroy all the demons before facing to Irenicus. If one or more of your characters is injured, just go away from the attacker. Don't fight too much in melee with Irenicus(Slayer) until it isn't needed. Use spells on him.

A good way to deal with demons at that stage, if you are having trouble is to have Airie use her Bolt of Glory on the Demon, one for each would be more than enough to weaken them significantly to allow Minsc, with the Equaliser, If you have it, to cut through the pack.

Irenicus, IMHO is a much tougher opponent and I would suggest using the usual spells to bring down his defenses. But the last three times I took the game, I had to Slayer-change to deliver the final blow. Some are destined to die in the fight but if you are fast enough, with the rod of ressurection, it is possible to revive the dead and get their items before the mage dies.

The first time i faced off with him i had no idea what good the pierce and breach spells did at all, so i kept pummeling him with rather useless spells from Aerie and Jan. While the rest of my team, my PC paladin, Minsc, Cernd and one more fighter type, cant recall who, had them battling the demons, killed them at the same time while Irenicus was watching and fighting back, but surprisingly i did defeat him fairly easily! Half of my team was wiped away though, but i beat him fair and square! ;)

It's quite long ago though, i have no memory of how i did it. I've only faced him that once anyway..

You defeated him fairly easily even though half your team was wiped away?

That doesn't sound like "fairly easily" to me.

Well when he said fairly easily I personally took that to mean that he did not have to use any of the more complicated spells, such as pierce magic and that kind of stuff. But thats just how I took it.

Pierce and Breach helped me, along with all the protective spells I could cast. I started out with summoned creatures to distract the demons while I headed West to get out of the way and prepare. One Balor followed me, but he went down pretty easily, and the rest were kept busy with various summoning spells.

When it came time to fight the Slayer, I had my fighter with the Vorpal Sword, Jaheira the Impaler, Minsc the Flail of Ages, Jan Brusers, while Aerie and Imoen stood back and fired spells.

Three of my party members died, but I saved just before the battle so may try it again just for the fun of it.

I always had Keldorn in my party at that point and him with Carsonomyr makes it alot easier just with the Dispell Magic factor.

Congratulations, you found a very cheesy way to kill mages ;)
