power attacks go from level 1 to level 5. It reduces you attack rolls, but increases damage.

Cleave ive never found usefull, because you will not kill anything with the secondary attacks.

Expertise is just weapon specialization. 3 stars to 1 star. Read the manual.

You will want the bull headed feat, for fighters with low int. will only be able to choose intimidate as a skill.

Improved critical and (if you can) dirty fighting. You will LOVE that.

Other than that, yhe only advice i can give you is on weapons.

    Great Swords ***
-> There are so many great swords in the game, you will want someone that can use them
    Axe ***
-> there are many decent axes, and if you play HoF, the kegsplitter will be SO helpful
    Bastard Sword ***
-> when you get wroth, you will know ;) .

first of all, your fighter(s) will have a lot of feat to distribute. so don't worry that much, just pick anything that looks beautiful and learn from the experience.

well, idarhl from this statement you can know that Baezlebub didn't even bother to look into expertise thus saying that expertise isn't a really important feat (at least for him and me).
when you use expertise, you reduce up to 5 in your attack roll and that the same number to your dodge bonus which in turns benefit your armor class. really it is nothing so big deal.

power attack on the other hand reduce up to 5 in your attack roll and transfer it to damage. it means that you will have a harder time hitting enemies but if you do, you do some extra damage. there are situations that the target will be hit no matter what, like when sleeping and stunned. so you can use power attack on them. also, some light or no armor enemies will be easier to hit, leaving some attack roll for damage wouldn't hurt. then again this isn't any thing crucial.

you have to choose power attack and expertise via special skill if you want to use them. however, cleave is automatic. if you have cleave and you killed an enemy in melee and you are not moving or doing anything else and you just turn to attack another target, you get an extra attack the next round. this one to me is useful.

i do agree with Baezlebub about the improve critical and dirty fighting part. if i may, i would like to add Improved Initiative and Luck of Heroes (if you are general human not subrace human).

there are many feats that benefits your saving throw. personally, i don't bother them that much. i choose them only when i have feat and nowhere to put. yes, a fighter is lack of wisdom and will fail the will saving throw but there are other ways to mend this beside taking the feat. for example, if my fighter was being dominated/charmed, my mage will dominate/charm him back. if my fighter was put into sleep, i will fire a bolt at him to wake him up.

now, about weapon specialization. i do have different opinion with Baezlebub. for me, i would choose long sword, hammer and bow. you would need at least two damage types so that you wouldn't feel helpless when dealing with enemies that immue to your attack. there is a topic which deals with weapon choice, take a look at

The first feats any of my fighters gets are:
-power attack, though I rarely use it it is a necessity for cleave
-cleave, allows you another attack when you kill an attacker with one blow, VERY handy
-weapon focus, atts two to damage of the cosen weapon type, as well as iirc 2 to attack roll - aquired on fighter level 4

After that I randomly choose, usually:
    -improved initiative (you attack faster)
-improved critical (increases critical range by one) HANDY!
-dirty fighting (never for pallies; it is especially great when you have a rogue-fighter who later uses crippling strike and such) HANDY!
-expertise (allows you to sacrifice your attack roll for the sake of your AC) HANDY!
-dodge (doh, AC bonus against melee attacks)
-deflect arrows (doh, AC bonus against missiles)
    -blind fight, HANDY!
-dash (faster movement, a must for a barbarian) HANDY!
-great cleave (unlimited *bonus* attacks when you chop down an enemy with one hit - use is doubtful since you later meet enemies with tons of hp)

I can also only recommend every feat that influences saves. Even without explanations I hope I could help a little. As for beeing bugged, a lot of nasty bugs have been fixed with the latest patch 2.01 ...

[IMG] I checked it out, Improved Initiative was not fixed in patch 2.01. It does nothing and thus it is useless until fixed by another patch.

if you want to choose maximized attack, you would need 4 lvl in concentration. other then that, concentration doesn't really help a fighter type character.

damn, every single character i had took improved initiative.

    @teekc:
    What's "Maximized attack" ?
How does a fighter need Concentration? (I thought it's for spell-casters only, perhaps also for Monks special strikes I suspect).

    Maximised damage works as descripted:
    -You need to have:
Weapon Specialization in 2 weapons, and Concentration 4
    -Effect:
All attacks do maximum damage for 10 seconds

=> clearly concentration isn't for spellcasters only ;)

Btw - I can only recommend to check the feat description in the explanation menue, very handy. The first time a Bioware game really explains some of its combat rules in the game.

    (a) You have to choose maximised attacks after you have the abilities necessary. it costs you a feat point.
    (b) If it is bugged, yes, it is useless.

    Teekc

I have heard that if your character is charmed/dominated and you charm/dominate him back then you "feeblemind" him. He will be useless since the game bugs up and treats it as an enemy that is now friendly but beyond your control. Its even more fun for a spellcaster since they lose the ability to cast spells.

Did this happen to you? I have read about it for at least three people.

I think Concentration actually WILL help your fighter - can't enemys's blows interrupt his attacks? In BG2 i had Minsc fighting with great sword, his attack:7+8=15:hit! but he get's hit at the same time and does no damage!!!I think same is here as i've seen my fighters getting interrupted. They begin to swing, are hit and do not end that swing - even with succesfull attack roll.OR it's just me?

yes it is true for charm but not dominate. you cannot control a charmed person but you can control a dominated person. since they are my fighters anyway, i don't really care if they can cast spell or not. later into the game under hof mode as enemies get harder and harder and my fighters fail will saving more, i changed my strategy. my fighter use throwing weapons more often and become the second wall to protect the spellcasters. summons are my first wall.
