Feats, class etc for a pure bow user?

Discussion in 'Neverwinter Nights (Classic)' started by TriLleX The Slayer, Jul 3, 2002.

  1. Just started with an elven ranger (again) and would like to make him pure "sniper", what feats etc should I take?

Well, sniper isn't the easiest calling in NWN, given the fairly short visual range. But if you want to play an archer, the feats are pretty straightforward.

Obviously, you want PointBlank shot (Because you'll be making a lot of them!), Called Shot, Rapid Shot, Weapon Focus (Bow), and Improved Critical (Bow). If you pick up some fighter levels (not a bad idea for the extra feats), you can add Weapon Specialization as well.

Don't go for a ranger, go for a pure fighter. When you go for pure Ranged attack, an elven fighter is better for he has the same skills at ranged attacks, but has more feats, and with those feats you can make yourself a better archer. Of course, stick to light or Medium Armor, else you max dex. bonus will be lowered.

Another possibily is to go for a rogue. When you play with a fighter henchmen, you can do sneakattacks every time.

In PnP, I would agree that a fighter is a far better choice for pure archer. But I do not think the same is true in NWN. Given the speed at which one levels, it is not as important to cram the feats into the early levels. Even as a pure ranger, you will have all the necessary feats by the end of chapter 2 most likely. And the ranger's superior skills (especially Spot/Listen/Search), spell casting, and animal companion are quite useful.

If the character in question were a half-elf or human, I'd recommend something like R16/F4, but as an elf that would impose a needless exp penalty at some point. I think that for the official campaign, a R10/F10 or R20 is better than a pure fighter.
