    I'm not a connosieur of horror films, but I do watch them occassionally. For some reason I thought of putting up a poll on who your favourite horror villain is. Villains derived from previous works or religious depiction are excluded. (e.g. Dracula, Frankenstein, the Devil) The emphasis is on independent creations who have taken on something of an iconic status of their own.

    Here are the choices:

    I'd have to say Jack Torrance - because he seems believable to me. A man could become insane and evil like him even without a supernatural evil influence.

    Oh man, the Tall Man was just too creepy as a kid when i first saw Phantasm. He was the opitamy of The ultimate BEBG. You couldn't defeat him for long & he ALWAYS came back with even more suprises

    My favorite villians are not in horror flicks... Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest), Mr Potter (It's a Wonderful Life), HAL9000 (2001: A Space Odyssey), and Keyser Soze (The Usual Suspects).

    X2. I voted the Tall Man. Creepy. Many of the others are cartoon characters (michale myers, jason, predators, freddy). The Tall Man was genuinely creepy.

    One of the creepiest villains I remember is Robert Mitchum in Charles Laughton's 'The Night of the Hunter', as preacher Harry Powell. Not exactly horror, but creepy.

    I'm with the poster who mentioned Hannibal Lecter -- though as he is written and sometimes depicted in the films he comes off as almost supernatural, he is in fact nothing more than an extremely intelligent, canny, and sadistic villain. He has an element of reality to him that is sadly lacking in slasher flicks. I consider Silence of the Lambs to be a horror film. And a kick butt one.
