I'm playing a F\M solo with tactics and ascenation (i'm probably going to uninstall most of the components after they kick my ass seven times in a row, but still).

I already made up my mind about using the staff of the magi, but since i'm a big fan of using shadow keeper to undo bad decisions (even race!), i wanted to ask your opinion wether it's better to use the staff or any two of the cool one handed weapons in the game...

"Better" is purely subjective, and may depend upon your willingness to use exploits to further your goals. Theoretically, by re-equiping the Staff of the Magi after each strike, you need never get hit by any enemy who can't see through the invisibility effect. This makes you effectively invulnerable in some conflicts, and not even the mighty Celestial Fury can boast that! Of course, you may struggle more at other points, but as they say: "swings and roundabouts". I'd go with your first instinct - I always have better games that way.

And if you get bored of cheesing your way past enemies, you can always change your proficiencies. :D

I've done both (but not with the mods you're using).

I enjoyed the staff user more, because I think it's a better weapon, as a backup weapon. You'll find against most enemies that you're not doing enough damage to justify it as your main weapon (unless they have spell protections). I only used it against spell protected baddies, whenever I was casting a spell, when demons were around, and when I wanted to be sneaky.

I started with two handed swords, but switched to halberds most of the time after the underdark, and did fine with them (esp. in ToB with the Ravager... best weapon in the game!).

You get access to a lot of proficiency points along the way. Specialize in staff and take dual wielding as well if you want to. That way you'll be more versatile. If you're going to be using staves I wouldn't put more than one pip in two handed style. I don't believe weapon speed can be dropped below zero and the other benefits of the style are gained with the first pip anyway.

Staff of the Magi for mages and protected characters, Staff of the Ram +6 for damage.

Who says staves don't hurt?
