A couple of days ago I had been playing IWD for a couple of hours, and routinely did a game save. There was a sound like a pistol shot from the drive. The disc had shattered into bits. My wife and daughter later amused themselves by re-assembling it like a jigsaw puzzle. They did an impressive job but the disc still wasn't playable. After a couple of cautious days, my daughter spent several hours with her Sims game with no shattering results, and everything appears to be back to normal.

So my question is: do any of the "pros" here have any idea what caused this?

A slight flaw in the surface of the disc can over time cause balance problems resulting in the disc falling apart at the high speeds it's spinning at. Flaws in the manufacturing process or simply bad material used are usually to blame. It's practically always a media problem, nothing to do with the drive.

Thanks, Tal. I hope that eliminates "spell backfire".

Oh this is so exciting and interesting, welcome to the club of CD slayers, pal! ;)

Hmm, how is your CD/DVD ROM/driver? A game CD has exploded in my PC just like you told a few years ago, I jumped in fear as it went...'BANG!'

It was a friend's CD of a game named Dungeon Keeper 2 (cool game!) I collected the very small bits of the CD too, but my CD driver was utterly broken and I needed to replace it, :wail: You are lucky indeed if yours is still functioning.

Nowadays I am in paranoia. I thought it happened as I had carelesly placed the CD in the darkness which somehow caused the explosion. I now spend loong minute, trying to fit ToB or IWD CD 'perfectly', my friends taunt with me.

    @Tal,

So you say it was media's low quality or failure? It was not my fault? I felt really ashamed to explode my friend's DK2 CD, you know, we never managed to find that cool game ever until last year. Now I have it and still play sometimes on the rare times I give IWD and BG2 a 'small' break.

This happened a few weeks ago. I replaced ToB CD, it went inside, I waited for a little bit to AutoLaunch menu to appear, it did not, and I heard strange noises from my driver, it was most unnatural, I quickly pushed its button to reveal the CD, at first it did not come out. GASP! I screamed, pushed again, this time it went out BUT my poor and most precious ToB CD was spinning soo fast when it was out, I caught it just in time or else it would go flying like a frisbee! Really.

I tried again and this never happened so far and I had fun playing the game. What was the cause of that, I was sooo scared indeed! Is it due to bad quality of my ToB CD (it has a lot of minor scratches, I fear.) or my CD ROM is plotting against me? Can you shed light to this mystery as well before I am left without any ToB CD to play my very favourite game?

Yes; I assumed that the CD was placed in the tray properly. Placing it in wrong (one side higher up or whatever) could also cause something like this.

As for the spinning CD; you shouldn't have tried to get it out by repeatedly clicking on the eject button. The first thing that happens after you click the button is that the drive stops the spinning of the CD to a halt. Sometimes repeatedly clicking can confuse the drive and it'll eject the tray with the CD still spinning.

I also wondered if I'd inserted the disc improperly, but assumed I couldn't have played for a couple of hours if that were so.

    Yes, that's a safe assumption.

But I had inserted my disc properly too, DK2 CD worked for about a minute till it exploded! Maybe over-heating or such thing is to blame?

Sometimes, it depends how long you've played it, what you have been doing in the game, the condition of the disk, how you put it in, and the type of computer. I have had problems with my game because i slept to often so it would glitch and then shut off.

Back in the old days, my friend had his precious WarCraft 2 CD shattered in a similar way. He too had to change his drive.

Since your drive seems to be working, the worst thing in this is probably to find a new copy of IWD (it's getting rare, I think).

[IMG] It really does. I live in Croatia, and not a single shop anywhere sells it anymore. :/
