The Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) has launched a US-wide campaign to educate parents on its system of ratings. In this, they are supported by senators Hillary Clinton and Joseph Lieberman. Here's a snip:

Representatives from the Entertainment Software Rating Board (ESRB) have joined with prominent US senators Hillary Rodham Clinton and Joe Lieberman to help launch a nationwide TV campaign to educate and encourage parents to use the ESRB's game rating system.

Appearing with ESRB president Patricia Vance on Capital Hill, the two senators lent their support for the new public service announcement campaign that has already been distributed to 800 TV stations across the country.

Additionally, GameStop/EB Games, a retailer, has started a campaign of its own to help parents gain the necessary insights. The initiative is entitled Respect the Ratings. You can find its website under this link. Here's a snip:

The “Respect the Ratings” campaign, the retailer says, reflects both its commitment to and support of the ESRB ratings system and its policy of restricting sales of mature rated titles to minors.

The retailer has created its own website, www.RespectTheRatings.com, featuring a full breakdown of the ratings system and what each individual rating stands for, a glossary of commonly used descriptions, terms, and acronyms to help parents better understand gaming, and an extensive list of resources for further research, including tips on monitoring game play.

In addition to the site, GameStop and EB Games says it also has full ESRB ratings information circulating in-store for parents who need more help.

 Educate the parents? How stupid would you have to be to need education about the game ratings? The ratings label includes a written description of what the rating means in terms of the types of objectionable content. The politicians just don't get it - I have said it before and I will say it again - most parents just don't care about ratings. It is that way with films and it is the same with games.

Depends. Sometimes people inherently distrust ratings established by someone else. Supplying some information and explaining more and more about the ratings can help rationalise them in parents' perception and, consequently, lead to better observance. ;)
