Edwin can't Identify

Edwin is my only mage in my party and he can't learn identify! am I going to have to spend 100GP every time I get an unidentified item? is there another way? Pls post!

 

If you go upstairs in Gaylen Bayle's house, you'll find a fellow who sells goggles that can cast "Identify" 3 times/day. Or you can take Haer'Dalis, who has a high lore skill.

Also, Edwin can also get a +10 lore bonus through a certain quest... Just indulge his desire for a certain piece of treasure he wants (you'll know) rather than try and claim it for the party (it's no good trying to, anyway). This also opens up one of the most comedy genius moments of the game!

Edwin can't identify as he's a conjurer, so his opposition class is divination. You could just buy loads of identify scrols, or CLUA them in with Shadow Keeper.

 

It's because a Conjurer's opposite school of magic is Divination, so Edwin can't learn any Divination spells (ID, True Sight, etc.). Glasses of IDing from the store in Gaelyn's upper floor are fairly cheap (2500 gp or so). Later in the game, Edwin might get enough lore from levels and a quest to ID stuff by himself. The cheapest place I've found for IDing is second floor of Gaelyn's house - 75 gp.

 

You can even steal the "identify" glasses.
If you don't have a party member who can pickpocket well pick up Jan for it. You save 1-2 potions this way.

Another way to raise Edwin's lore is giving him a potion of insight or temporary int-raising potions to drink when you have gathered some items.

Since mages gain +3 lore per level he will be able to identify anything later in the game.

 

@Moon Elf - Scrolls of Identify won't help much if you can't use them.
Glasses of ID are probably the best option.

 

The best way to get around Edwin's lack of ID skill is to have a bard in the party.

 

There are 2 glasses of identification in the game (can't remember where the 2nd one is, but it's in Amn), with 3 charges per day each, so you really don't need someone who can cast Identify.

Having a bard, or a secondary spellcaster (Imoen, Nalia, Jan, Aerie) in the party will also solve the problem, since they can all scribe Identify.

 

You can get Glasses of Identification via the Limited Wish spell, with a high wisdom (a Potion of Insight will do the trick). "I wish to see everything as it really is", or something similar is the line.

You can purchase yet another pair in TOB somewhere iirc.

 

Ya that's it, it was Limited Wish. But, as far as I know, those are the only two pairs in the game (if there's on in ToB I never found it, and besides this is the SoA forum )

 

You only really need one plus the Bag of Holding, if you don't mind abusing the auto-recharge function of the Bag.

When ever you remove it from a container (bag of holding or the wolfskin bag) it will contain one charge of the identify spell.
So put it in the bag, take it out, identify, repeat.
