DnDVault has posted a helpful starting guide for D&D noobs when playing DDT. With some good, solid common sense rules, it's definately worth a read for those who haven't had a lot of experience with D&D in the past. Here's a look:

    3. KICK THE TIRES – TRY OUT THE CHARACTERS For the noobs out there, we'd recommend not exactly putting too much time and investment in the first batch of characters you create, because unless you've really studied up they are probably going to suck. There are many different races, classes, and deities you can focus on, and rarely if ever will you nail a character your first time out, where you'll take them out on the field and go, "Ah, perfection is thy name!"

Once you've created your first team of characters take them through at least the first three tasks, which will net you an opportunity to see two of them on the field at once, four on the field at once, and then ultimately the full six that you'll be able to have throughout the game. By using these relatively quick levels to see how characters perform and to see what traits affect what in actual combat and in terms of actions, you'll get a better feel for the characters than simply reading some facts. Besides, who would buy a car simply on facts alone without getting behind the wheel and trying the ride itself? If you've played the first three levels and you're still on the fence, go ahead and do a fourth quest and let that be your deciding factor.

It's okay to fail in your first creation, and I say that from experience since I've had to start this game over a good five or six times by now, trying out different classes, setting them up with specific skills, and then watching in utter horror as I'm forced to watch the lousiest bunch of adventurers I've ever seen.

    Here's the rest.
