I've played through the beginning of BG1 a few times now and have grown annoyed with my utter lack of knowledge of why things are happening the way they do.

#1 - Why does minsc only join my party when I'm a lawful good paladin and not when Im a Chaotic Good/Neutral fighter?

#2 - Same, but with Xan?

and I guess my real question is, when DO they join your party and how can I make sure other NPC's I might want to try out later join as well?

If your CHA is too low, you may get an unfavorable reaction from them. So long as it's at least decent (8+, preferably at least 13; there's no difference from 8-12, or 16-17) and you haven't smashed your reputation with evil deeds, you should be able to get anyone. A high CHA can even overcome bad rep; I usually have very high CHA, and I always get who I want.

    Hahaha!!!

Thanks Felinoid. I'm so used to the cakewalk that is BG2 playing with 3 Cha I didn't even realize. My next plan is to play a more realistic character with average stats though. Thanks again.

If your rep is low good characters won't join you.
Same the other way too with evil dudes.

Keep in mind that low Charisma also makes some NPCs not want to re-join you, i.e. they might join up but if you drop them ("wait here I'll come back for you later") they may not be there when you come back or may refuse to re-join you.

I always play the BG series with a high Charisma. I want both ring slots open for other magic rings and usually just sell the Human Influence ring.
