I need advice on when to dual my fighter to a mage. I know that kensai-mage is a favourite with many but I prefer a straight fighter cos I want to wear armor, use bows when I feel like it.

I'd like to know, in TOB, what is the max level I can bring my fighter to and still reach the max level for my mage. Is it 13?

Anyone has any advice on when to dual.

9 and 12 are good levels to dual a fighter, because you will have recieved max hitpoints bonus at level 9. If you're waiting for 12th level, you get better THAC0, and if memory serves, you get some Saving throw boni as well

The exp cap in ToB is 8,000,000. Max level for a mage or sorceror is 31, and that is achieved at 7,875,000. So you have 125,000 exp to play with, which is exactly the requirement for 13th level as a fighter. When I was initially looking at this for one of my characters I was worried that since these values add to precisely 8,000,000, I'd have to try to get exactly 125,000 before I dualled. This isn't the case, as any exp over the level requirement is discarded when you dual-class (so even if you end up with 130,000 exp, when you dual it will take you back to 125,000, allowing you to get to 7,875,000 with your mage and hit 31).

    ermm.. fighter level 13 = 1.250.000 xp :)
Still, it doesn't really matter coz after about lev 24-25 levelling up has almost no advantages for a mage. (and if you play a party of 6 chars, you'll hardly reach the xp cap)

At level 12 you get cool saving throw bonuses (boni?) as a fighter. And level 13 will give you an additional 1/2 attack per round as well as a very nice thaco.

I'd say go for bows :) Be a sniper mage lol

Man, I must be going blind or something... you're absolutely right - it's 1.25 million, not 125,000. Still, I know I'd sacrifice one or two high levels (which only really get you +1 HP anyway) for an extra few fighter hit dice and THAC0 reductions.
