[IMG] what level would you dual class Imoen if she was going to be your only thief and mage in the party in a straight unmoded TotSC game? Why would you dual at that level?

I recall her reaching 100 in FT and OL at level 6 for me. I might consider dualling her at level 5 and take potions with me to boost her skills. I believe that level 7 is too late if you are relying on her alone as it takes too long for her to reactivate her thieving skills.

Dual her just before you do a heap of non-critical wilderness map areas; this way she can get most of the experience to reactivate her Thief class before you come across dungeons with trpas and locks.

What level you dual her at isn't really set in stone. The only reason to dual from a thief is to have a non-thief character with some thief skills, so when you dual depends wholly on what skills you want.

Myself, I only dual Imoen if I'm going to have someone else be the dedicated thief, and then I dual once I've maxed out stealth. A mage that can stealth after casting means free damage from just-out-of-sight Fireballs.

I think I advanced her two levels and then dualed her to a conjurer and it worked out great! Coran usually handles locks by then if I'm not playing a thief anyways, which I normally am :D

But is this wise if she is going to be your only thief?

If Imoen's my only thief, I don't dual her. I value thiefly skills more than magic, so it's too much of a pain for me to work around. If she's my back-up, though, then I let her get to 80-100% pickpocketing to free up my other thief to concentrate on Traps & Locks.

/me smacks Bassil with an oar
How did you miss the first half of that sentence? I only dual her if there's someone else to be my main thief.

[/me grabs the oar and smacks Felinoid with it . . . Bassil wrote: "what level would you dual class Imoen if she was going to be your only thief and mage in the party in a straight unmoded TotSC game?"]-dmc

/me grabs the oar back and smacks himself with it again
In that case, my answer would be simply...don't.

As only thief in your party: Never.
Either you dual early and don't get enough skill points or you dual late and have to play a long time without thieving skill.
It's possible playing without a thief if you want to disarm traps by saving and reloading and use knock spells to open locks, but it's painful.

There are many great NPCs like Montaron, Shar-Teel or Coran who can be both great fighters and perfect thieves.

You can take up to 6 thief levels and still reach the highest possible (illusionist !) mage level within the XPCap.
I dualed her at level6 in my game, I don't recommend dualing later.

For perfect trap disarming 80, maybe even 75 in find traps is enough. I'd spend the remaining points in lockpicking and dual her at level6 if you really want to keep her as only thief and mage.

What party do you have in mind ?

Durlag's Tower has traps which require greater than 80 in Fnd Traps doesn't it? Or is my memory failing me?

PC is Ranger/Cleric and Imoen Thief/Mage. I my take on 1 or 2 other NPCs here and there but Mainly PC & Imoen.

@Decados: 70 was enough to detect the traps in upper Durlag's Tower, but not to disarm them.
The last trap I found in lower Durlag's tower was disarmed with 80 at the first try and I assumed that the prior traps aren't more difficult (except one trap you are not supposed to be able to disarm).

@Bassil: In your case I'd dual Imoen at level 6. Dualing to Illusionist will yield both more power and fun.
Save the easy areas and quests where you don't need a thief for the dualing period.

Well, with only two characters, it should be possible to take Imoen to level 6 as a thief and then get to level 7 as a specialist. In 6-character parties, I'd never recommend this, as you would be out of a thief for much too long. However, with only two party members, you should be reasonably OK with getting those levels back while avoiding trap heavy areas.

    @kmonster: Ah, my bad then.

As has been said, you should only really dual her if you have a small party, as you need to reactivate the thief class ASAP.

Unless you're talking about that timed fireball in the small circular room, they're all disarmable. One is as high as 99, though.

Yes, I'm talking about this one.
Would you mind sharing your knowledge ? I'd like to know
    - which trap is difficulty 99 ?
    - what is the difficulty of the hold traps at the upper levels ?
    - what is the difficulty of the last trap (at the chest) in lower Durlag's tower ?

    1. Just below the teleportation chamber, there's a side chamber with a statue in it. Half the floor of that chamber nearest the door is a trap that shuts the door and sets off a Cloudkill. Which means you're temporarily trapped in that room taking damage, until your thief can pick the door lock to let your guy back out. That nasty little surprise is the 99.

    2. If you're talking about the tower part, where the normal ghouls are (as opposed to the dungeon part), they range from 50 to 80 in difficulty. The Hold trap is an 80.

    3. That's another 80.

I say this with a proviso that Tutu or other mods may change these numbers.

Dualing her at 6th level gives her 70 in find traps 70 in open locks and 45 in stealth. a potion here and there and she is lookin sweet! By the time we wander the wilderness areas a while she will have her thief skills back.

I dualed her at level 6, did all the wilderness areas and she is now level 6 - 6

Question is (as I've never dualed before) when does she regain her thieving abilities. Level 7?
