DSL = Digital Subscriber Line. It's a broadband form of internet access.

I got DSL myself about 3 months ago, after a year of searching. See, you have to be within 17 or 18,000 feet (someone please translate this into furlongs or hectares or whatever you Brits use) or the connection speed drops way off. But Verizon was doing a trial to see if they could extend the range, and I signed up. The connection isn't error free, but it has smoothed out a lot, and I love it. It is like 20-30 times faster than dial-up, and I would highly recommend paying the extra bux for it.

[IMG] Umm, hate to be a stickler, but a hectare is a metric unit or area.

    1 hectare is 100m x 100m (I think, I'm used to acres)

It's even worse when the stickler spells things wrong (or, indeed!)

There are some speed-tests on the net, where you can see what your internet-speed is. Does someone know one? Then we could test who has the best connection :)

One thing I know for sure is that I don't have the fastest. DSL isn't even available where I live.

These online tests are not always a good comparison from one connection to another. Anyone closer to the test server will have an unfair advantage. Here is what I mean:

For the test link above I recieve 566.7 Kbps.

I reside in Canada, so for kicks I tried out my ADSL provider's test utility and it reports a speed of 1568 Kbps download and 352 Kbps upload.

check out Broadband speed test links for a few test links.

I tried the dslreports speed test using the SJ CA server, and I get 1267 Kbps dl and 192 Kbps ul.

    Anyone Else?

[IMG] Mine seems to average around 400 up and 200 down. No servers very close to me in Arkansas though. *sigh*

[IMG] Honestly, I am disappointed with DSL. I had cable service about a year ago and absolutely loved it. After I moved - into an area where cable is notoriously slow - I decided to give ADSL a spin. Big mistake. I ran one of those speed test thingies and got something ridiculous like 17.7K. I'm not impressed.
