Here are today's Dragon Age forum highlights, collected by NWVault. Please take into account that these are only single parts of various threads and should not be taken out of context. Bear in mind also that the posts presented here are copied as-is, and that any bad spelling and grammar does not get corrected on our end.

More choices for female characters, please

I agree about the standards, but the postings don't seem to support the contention that what's found attractive (at least in a CRPG romantic interest) varies hugely from woman to woman. Of course there are excpetions, but mostly we seem to agree: Anomen & Aarin bad, Valen good (or at least much better). And Anomen and Aarin were rubbish because they were wet (Valen was only slightly soggy). I know we women are meant to like sensitive types, but pur-lease! Give me insensitive over pathetic any day.
    Anomen's romance was rubbish?

Are you purposefully trying to insult me, or is that your way of getting me to listen to your point? While there are certainly some who didn't care for Anomen much there are plenty who enjoyed his story and they are not "exceptions".

I think I've learned a lot since him and Aarin Gend (BG2 was five years ago, remember)... overall I think Carth and Valen worked better... but the one thing I think I've learned more than anything else, and which keeps getting reinforced each time these types of threads come up, is that there is not any unified concept of what is good for the romances. I don't know which postings you're reading, but I see each one asking for something different.

Which is not very useful, I know, when what you want is to distill some practical info so that the limited budget for writing that goes into this aspect (as the other 90% is spent writing the actual story) is spent as economically as possible.

Mind you, that seems to be difficult to do when all the positive aspects of the longest romance story you've ever written... like the fact that it was incredibly complex and split into two completely different paths or that the character underwent actual change and turned into a pretty sweet guy... are dismissed as rubbish based on what I can only describe as whimsy.

Do I seem like I take some of these comments personally? Well, for someone who tries to take these comments (and for me this has been a labour of years worth of effort) and dissect them to try and improve my craft it is nothing short of maddening that on this particular subject all I seem to get are completely mixed messages.

    AAAH! *brain explodes*

Well, now look what you've done. How do you expect me to write anything with THAT?

    More:
It's been a couple of months ago now since David posted a poll on LoN, giving some different character concepts and fishing for opinions. The reaction, of course, was to treat it as a buffet instead. I joined it with the "Oh, a little of that, and a bit of this, and just a pinch of that idea over there," of course. OVer all, the consensus was indeed that there was no consensus. Indeed, I'm notsure if I should be hopefully that it was that helpful at all, and might have primed his poor brain for the explosions earlier on the thread. Sorry about that. I"ll get the ninja squirrels in with mops.
There was actually some very good information in that poll thread. I think it more told me what not to do, as opposed to what to do, but still very useful. All brain explosions aside, that is.

Quote: Anyway, though in a perfect world they would be able to have several different fullly fleshed out and realized characters available as both friends and romances for everyone's tastes, this just isn't going to happen. They've said that something to the length AND breadth of BG2 isn't really going to happen again, and what we'd be asking for is even more than that. Also, I think that neither several short, shallow romances of different types nor one big, committee approved, only blandly appealing romance would really make everyone happy. I'm mostly hopeful that the possibility for friendship options means that side-quests with the character can be more easily justified (because it's open to anyone and not just those who pursue the romance), thus allowing for more character development and interaction overall. IE, even if no character strikes a romantic chord or you're just not interested in pursuing romances in an RPG, there still will be plenty of NPC interaction to have fun with.
The above summarizes my feelings on the entire matter in a nutshell.

    More:
*scratches head* I don't think he means suggestions aren't useful. It's just that there's not going to be a bunch of different choices for the romances. There just isn't enough resources to do them justice.
Exactly. Which is why I try to get feedback, so I can do as much as possible with the resources I have. I'm under no illusions that it will ever be possible to please everyone, but hopefully I can work on trying to distill some sort of alchemy that will make my romance characters more appealing to as many women as possible... if such a thing can even be done. Call me a masochist, but it is important to me that I get this right.

What are the chances of an OS X release?

Hmmmmmm.... does the publisher control on which systems the game is released ? Then M$ would indeed be abysmal...

But I think it depends upon the agreement between the two companies.
The publishers input regarding which system to release the game on is very substantial.
