I'm not just talking about the SP blog here, I know a lot of people have other blogs dotted around the place.

Some people I've spoken to have said that they wouldn't post a blog as they tend to use a diary and only write in it very personal things that they don't want people to know. Fair enough, good on them.

However, a lot of us are now blogging away. Why do we do it? More to the point, why do YOU do it?

Personally, I write mine on here because I sometimes need to order my thoughts, get a new perspective from peoples comments, want to explain myself or I'm just happy that something has happened and want to tell my SP family about it.

    So...tell, tell, tell!

I've never kept any form of diary or blog before this year. I have a blog now though I prefer to refer to it as a "journal" :p but only because I've been abroad this year. It's 1) a good way to remember my misadventures in Europe in the future 2) A good way to keep my family informed of what I'm doing so they don't worry 3) A way to whet the appetites of my siblings for travel and encourage them so that they get excited for it.

Once I leave in 3 weeks, I stop again.

Not anymore. I originally wanted a journal, so hey, it was available for free on the internet. Woot! Then I noticed every thought that I had during the day was gone when PC time came. So I use a real journal now, with paper and stuff.

And writing a real journal is more RPG-ish anyway.

I don't. I really should, but I don't. My life is otherwise not that interesting. I find that my time is taken up with message boards, online games and my e-mail. How do you people still find time to have a life, blog, look for porn and play online poker?

I never really saw the point of blogging...it's so similar to a message board that I'd rather post on a forum like the BoM. That being said, I have a few blogs here on SP, and even fewer on the local news station's website. :rolling:

I need to feel like I'm writing for someone to get me started on writing anything and I like to write. Admittedly, I don't write that much in any case...I don't care too much if anyone even reads the stuff I post in my blogs...(but it's a nice thing if I ever get any feedback...)

[IMG] I started a blog recently. The reason I did this, is because I thought it was more of a personal question, to those who were interested. But I didn't want to bother everyone with it, who reads the boards. Posting directly on the forums make it plain for all to see, and considering the subject I had (rep comments), I didn't want it to come across as a criticism.:(
Some posts just shouldn't be posted directly, because they would just add clutter. Because it is a blog, it doesn't need to be judged for its worthiness as a thread.
I think many people use the Whatnots board he same way as a blog.

I've done a few things on the PS blog, but nothing beyond that. Never saw the point really.

I blog occasionally. Mostly an introspective type of thing. I do tend to get cryptic if I know that people who are familiar with me will be reading it. I had a blog once that was completely anonymous and I used it to get some things off my chest but I was still careful to get rid of cookies etc. on my computer so that nobody came across it by accident.

I used to keep a lot of paper journals before I ever had a computer. About a year ago I dug all of those out of a box and destroyed most of them. I did keep my dream journals however.

Sorry, but I can see absolutely no point in blogging, not mention the fact that 'blog' is such a dumb sounding word.

True dat. It's no wonder "blog" was top of Maddox's list If these words were people, I would embrace their genocide. I mean, the amount of crap that has spewed onto the web as a direct result of the blogging "phenomenon" is unbelievable. Instead of websites with actual content, we have weblogs which are just a masturbatory exercise by people sad enough to believe that other folk would be oh-so interested in their small, pathetic lives. Blogging is just a sad testament to the West's widespread egoism -- why else would so many people spend so much of their time writing about themselves? Very, very few blogs have worthwhile content and to make matters worse, many reputable websites (e.g. the BBC) have taken to using "bloggers" rather than "columnists" - O.K., it's just a name change, but why do it unless you're painfully desperate to appear trendy?

You know, you don't actually need to write only about yourself in a blog, or about yourself at all. Many of the best blogs out there are opinion/report blogs and as such hold at least as much value as your average message board post, if not more. So lumping everyone who blogs into the egoist basket is more than a little insulting, especially considering we have members with their own blogs here and I enjoy reading quite a few of them.

I also see no problem whatsoever with purely personal blogs. No one is forcing anyone to read any of them if they don't find them interesting. But to many of us just getting a glimpse into someone else's life can be interesting.

I understand that you have no love for blogs, but spitting on everyone who blogs is really not very different from calling anyone who posts on any massage board a sad person because they have the audacity to presume they have anything to share that anyone would find interesting. But we know that that's rarely the case, don't we?

[IMG] I very rarely write about myself. :(

I only have a blog on SP and usually use it to keep track of things I need to do or want to remember for further use. Things that would be useful if people commented on but don't warrant a topic or a post elsewhere.

I'm completely blocked off from the chatroom where I would talk to most people anyway, posting what I blog about in RBP or another generic thread would just mean they get lost and I like to keep notes in a place where I would remember to look easily. I don't blog to 'appear trendy', I have absolutely no illusion of being in any sense 'with it', I am also highly aware nobody is interested in my pathetic life. But I don't see the harm in having a little corner where I can just put what I want to write :o

Hehheh, yeah. I agree that reading some blogs will leave you dumber than you were to begin with, but you read them at your own risk:p You can't make judgements about blogs, since they don't claim to be of any literary quality, entertainment value, or social relevance whatsoever. They are on the public domain, but you have to actively look for them to see them.
So you are the bloghorse magpie [but don't beat yourself up over it:lol:]

    [IMG] Right.

I should probably have known that posting on an internet forum about the worthlessness of blogging was the www equivalent of trying to sell pork pies in a mosque on a Friday.

Here's how it flies: very few blogs are worth reading. This is a statement, I feel, we can all agree on. Most of them aren't worth reading for a melange of reasons, including (but not limited to):
    • Utter solipsism
    • Absence of content worth reading
    • Extreme political views
    • Atrocious literacy
    • They're actually viral ads
My particular beef about blogs, however, tends to be those that appear to be a desperate imitation of celebrity culture -- a "me me me" cry to the web. For this reason, I'm also no fan of FaceBook or MySpace.
This is something I have to disagree with: you absolutely can make those judgements. Hell, it's practically your civic duty. The level of "noise" on the internet has been rising for years. Think of the servers groaning under the weight of all that bilge. It's pushing SP's hosting costs up. It's using energy. It's contributing to the death of the planet (O.K., this might be hyperbole :p).

There are worthwhile blogs. Off the top of my head, I can only think of one (Random Acts of Reality) which is a blog by an EMT working in London. Although it falls into the narcissistic traps blogging brings on occasion, it's mostly an affecting & satirical (in a-you-couldn't-make-this-up way) insider's account of the National Health Service. It's also a well put together site, rather than a Lycos/geocities/MSN/etc. -based horror show.

Now, in some ways there's nothing intrinsically wrong with people making their own "little corner on the web", as I think 8 put it. And there isn't. But the "blogosphere" can't keep expanding, or we'll all suffocate under the weight of irrelevant links and photos of people we don't know vomiting on tramps. Ultimately, it's about cleanliness, and the 'net is becoming increasingly cluttered.
Fair point - we're all part of the problem...

Blogs require very few resources since they're primarily text and low traffic, so the cost of them to SP now is negligible. And I'm relatively sure it still would be even if we had hundreds of them.

To clarify, I wasn't specifically suggesting that SP's own blogging network was some kind of bandwidth-hogging monster, but thinking more of the overall 'net, and the increased demand for server space from larger (and ever-growing) blogging networks, which would require increased supply from servers, and thus push prices up overall. So, more of a macro- than micro-economic reason.

That, and I was half-joking anyway. Damn 'net, neutering sarcasm... :grr:

I don't blog because I see no point in me blogging. Most blogs in my opinion are a waste of time so I don't bother reading them. I do read some blogs mostly done by proffessionals in their respective area and published on major news sites giving them more credibility than your average blog and usually proper sources which many blogs desperately lack.
