Hi. I;m currently having some major problems running BG1, as indicated by my thread in the BG1 forum, and i'm begining to think of skipping directly to BG2 instead.

I've already played the game up to when you enter baldur's gate itself a few times before each time, for a reason or another, no more save games. I was wondering if playing through BG1 and doing every single side-quest (or at least the ones available for good chars) would change my BG2 experience that much, and benefit much. Playing BG2 with chars that will start higher, and have access to all quests is the one and only reason i've decided to play BG1 again at all.

You start BG2 at level 7/8 (89,000 XP), depending on your class - thieves, bards, mages and sorcerers are the higher of the 2. You can be a higher level by going through BG1 and exporting your PC. Ican't remember off-hand what BG without TotSC total experience is, but with TotSC it's like 161,000 for doing everything in the game.

It will not change anything important not playing through BG1.

The XP max on straight BG without Tales of the Sword Coast is the 89k that you start BG2 with when you make a starting character.

The only real difference at all is that when you go through BG1 you can get the tomes that will raise each of your stats by 1. You do not have these added to your character when you go through BG2 like you could have if you imported it and this one is really rather minor as is the little less XP you have starting if you imported a game that went through BG1+ToSC.

I think it's just a coolness factor taking the same character through the whole series. Otherwise, it really doesn't matter too much unless you're really powergaming.
