Disappointed

Discussion in 'BG2: Shadows of Amn (Classic)' started by Gholam High LvL Mage, Jun 24, 2001.

  1. [IMG] I noticed that I cannot get more "spell-squares" in my mage book! I have removed the xp-cap and installed LvL 50 rulepack, but nothing happens. It cannot be worth to play mage if u can't get more of those squares. I have 5 or 6 LvL 1, and 2 LvL 9 squares, what's the point? I only have 18 in intelligence, but it should be enough. Can I do anything to get more squares?

Also I was wondering if u can dual from berserker to Thief. Thanx in advance.

All I can think of is use items that give you extra spells, like ring of wizardry, etc.

I don't think the rule pack thing works great though, so why not get ToB when it's out and it will raise the exp cap, so you can get more "spell squares".

I havn't played a mage as my main character, so really I don't know about this.

Oh, just a thought, Nalia onyl has 17 intelligence, but does she still get lvl 9 spells?

If the game follows the AD&D rules, the most spells you can get of any level as a mage is 9. There are some magic items that will increase this max. As far as the Level 50 patch, without it you can't memorize any level 9 spells. The XP cap limits your level to 17 which is one level lower than needed to gain level 9 spells.

I have tried the following dodge to learn more spells (my 18 intelligence mage maxed out on level 5 spells quite early in the game, don't quite know how I managed it)...

    - set the difficulty to "ridiculously easy" (so that you don't need to roll for a chance to learn the spell)

    - drink a potion of intelligence to get 25 intelligence

    - learn your backlog of spells all at once

    - don't forget to turn the difficulty back up!

I got quite a few more spells than I was technically allowed this way, and- yes- they were still there when the potion wore off. I think you get fewer experience points for learning the spells with the difficulty turned lower, but it'll drive you crazy reloading to try again if you leave the difficulty high and then keep "failing" to learn the spell- which is more likely for the high-level spells it sounds like you're after.

What I meant was that with ToB installed, etc the exp cap will allow you to learn lvl 9 spells, but it says in the spell tables and abilty tables that you can only cast/learn lvl 9 spells with 18 intelligence or more, whereas Nalia only has 17 intelligence. Is this so?

That question you should post in ToB thread - I don't think those who obtained ToB even read these questions anymore ...

Is it possible that intelligent is a factor? From the AD&D Rules FAQ by Dan Simpson found on this website,

    int of 18 gives you max spell = lvl 9, % to learn spells = 85 and # of spell / lvl = 18.

but int of 19 gives lvl 9, 95 and ALL respectively

Consider that int-19 is close to genius ... however, I recommend to drink one of these potions that give you +3 on int to maxx your ability to earn spells. Your "learned spell" slots become unlimited then, as sprite said.

19 is past genius, 18 is the normal human maximum, and humans can be geniuses ;->. If you look in the old monster manual, a genius monster was consider to have an intelligence of 17 or 18, higher was like super-genius or something. So 19 is nearly as stupid as a genius ;->.

It's poitless to rais your int beyond 19. WIth an int of 19 you can already learn as much spells as you want.
And about the "squares". You can't have more of 'em. You can double all your spell memorization slots if you get edwin's amulet, but that can't be done without cheating and I don't feel like teaching ppl to cheat propely right now...

[IMG] Technically it depends on difficulty level, Vicsun.

With 19 Int your chance to learn a spell is 95%. With 24 Int the chance is 100%.
