Did I dual class badly?

Discussion in 'BG2: Shadows of Amn (Classic)' started by biggreenpriest, Apr 26, 2001.

  1. [IMG] I have a thief (assassin) with

I focused on making her a fair thief, but a better backstabber, so high hide in shadows.

I took her to level 11, where it would take over 200,000 xp's to get to level 12. She has 4x backstab, 4 poisons, a very good character. Then I dualed her to fighter. Gave her 4 *'s in two-handed sword and gave her Lilacor +3, from the slave sewers.

She is doing ok, I'm just using her as a "blocker" in my team of four, with Jaheira as my real tank, as she gets leveled.

I'm worried. I'm seeing that everyone else started fighter and then went thief. Did I make a boo-boo?

This is my first time to dual, and I thought I had read up on the topic. Perhaps not.

One problem...Can't backstab with two-handed sword. Longsword the way to go.

[IMG] No, your choice is ok.
The main reason for being a fighter first is to get the high HP's.
Your character will have low HP's but the THAC0 will be really great later.

    A small problem though.
I think you can only backstab with weapons a thief can use, so 2H swords would not work. Edited: sorry, I didn't see your post Gonmar
Celestial Fury - katana - is perhaps the best weapon for backstabbing.

A proficiency in Single Weapon Style will pay off well thanks to the extra critical hits. :)

Perhaps you didn't dual badly, but maybe "not as well" ;)

The general thought about dualing fighters, as I understand it,is that if you do the fighter first you get two of their main advantages (1d10+ HP per level and Grandmastery) by level 9, then you dual to another class where you can gain unlimited levels (until you reach XP cap). The other classes you are constantly getting better spells, or more points to distribute in thieving and added backstab multipliers, as you level up.

Actually, you should be fine with your character. And you may have a better gaming experience because you went against conventional wisdom. Your character's main advantage now, IIRC, is the THAC0 will reduce at the fighters pace which is nothing to sneeze at. :)

    biggreenpriest;

You chose wisely! This may not be the best dual in terms of sheer power or strategy, but it will make for a fun character, and that is the goal!

BTW: What's your connection to Ligonier? I went to RTS and had a few classes with RC Sproul. Haven't seen to many evangelicals on the Forum, so you have my curiousity!

  6. Hmmmm, you are right about the two-handed problem. I may backtrack just to fix that one. Long sword or, if I go to the temple district right away for a little "celestial seasonings", katana.

I will give two *'s to katana and two to single wield. She's also crossbow and short bow skilled, and since the patch, poisoned arrows work. Interesting that the poison works on NPC's that are not effected by arrows--so I can shoot Kagax with a less than +4 weapon, but still poison him if he fails his save.

PS Matthew: Email me at rbarnes@ligonier.org for bio info. Perhaps we know some of the same folks. Nice to meet you--
